Very Good in Dustjacket. 0691117365. 104 pages. hardcover. keywords: Europe Netherlands Literature Poetry Translated Anthology World Literature. DESCRIPTION - Though the Netherlands has been the site of vigorous literary activity since at least the Beweging van Vijftig (Movement of the Fifties) poets, the status of Dutch as a 'minor' language spoken by only twenty-two million people has kept its rich poetry more or less a secret. This volume - featuring J. M. Coetzee's finely wrought English translations side-by-side with the originals - brings the work of six of the most important modern and contemporary Dutch poets to light. Ranging in style from the rhetorical to the intensely lyrical, the work here includes examples of myth-influenced modernist verse, nature poetry, experimental poetry, poems conscious of themselves within a pan-European avant-garde, and Cees Nooteboom's uncompromising reflections on the powers and limitations of art. In addition to Nooteboom, the poets represented are Gerrit Achterberg, Hugo Claus, Sybren Polet, Hans Faverey, and Rutger Kopland - a who's who of contemporary Dutch poetry. In Youth, Coetzee's main character claims that 'of all nations the Dutch are the dullest, the most antipoetic.' With these marvelous translations, the author proves his protagonist wrong. inventory #34912.

Añadir al carritoCloth. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. None Ilustrador. First edition. A pleasing first edition, first printing of this metafictional novel about animal right from South African novelist J. M. Coetzee. First edition, first printing. A metafictional novella about animal rights, consisting of two chapters, "The Philosophers and the Animals" and "The Poets and the Animals," which were first delivered by Coetzee as guest lectures at Princeton. The stories feature a recurring character, the Australian novelist Elizabeth Costello, who is Coetzee's alter ego. This work is considered a discussion of the foundations of morality, the need of human beings to imitate one another, to want what others want, and the possibility of this leading to violence, against a parallel need to scapegoat non-humans. Written by John Maxwell Coetzee, a South African and Australian novelist, essayist, linguist, and translator. The recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature, Coetzee is one of the most critically acclaimed and decorated authors in the English language. Introduced and edited by Amy Gutmann, an American academic and diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to Germany. The work is followed by a collection of responses by Marjorie Garber, Peter Singer, Wendy Doniger and Barbara Smuts. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, excellent. Original unclipped dust wrapper is very smart with minor wear to the extremities and light sunning to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. With a library ink stamp to the front free endpaper and title page. Fine. book.
