In their preface (reprinted from Gascoyne's Collected Verse Translations, published in 1970) the editors record that they "have greatly benefited" from "the research of A…rthur Uphill" In effect a revised edition of Collected Verse Translations (1970), with some work omitted and previously unpublished translations added, including from Hölderlin, Jouve and Mallarmé. The cloth bound issue was limited to 50 copies.Arthur Uphill (1931-2009) joined the staff of Bertram Rota Ltd. in 1955 and worked for the company as a cataloguer for nearly thirty-eight years. He brought to the company an extraordinary depth of knowledge of the expatriate authors living and working in Paris after 1918 and most especially of Gertrude Stein and Samuel Beckett.

Two stapled pamphlets containing poems by David Gascoyne, Kathleen Raine, Christina Rossetti, John Fletcher (music by Ivor Gurney) and Frances Bellerby read/performed at the funeral of Alan Clodd which was held at Islington Crematorium. Two signed coloured photographs of Alan Clodd lo…osely inserted and with inscriptions to Eric and Jane [Stephens] in friendship from Alan. Summer 2002.' One also says 'In the upstairs bedroom standing in front of Prufrock!' the other says 'Hard at work in my office!' Accompanying the photographs is a signed handwritten letter on ruled notepaper addressed from 22 Huntingdon Rd., N2 9DU dated 27/10/02 consisting of about 40 words in which Alan Clodd says he forgot to give Eric the photographs and that he enjoyed the meal from Waitrose. Two printed sheets loosely inserted that give details of the poems read and the text of the recordings played at an event called Remembering Alan which was held at the British Library Auditorium on Monday 9 June 2003. The introduction was given by Alan Clodd's brother and Stephen Stuart-Smith who organised the tribute gave the address. A card depicting Wells-next-the-Sea loosely inserted with a printed label stating it is from Miss K. M. Clodd [Alan's niece], 7 Church Plain, Wells-next-the Sea, Norfolk NR23 1EQ to Eric [Stephens] dated 18.6.03 and consisting of about 135 words in which she says she is sorry that they didn't have much time to have a chat. 'What a marvellous event - I am sure Alan would have been quite overwhelmed by the wonderful tributes and the selection of poems read.' She encloses a typed copy, 2pp., recto only, of her father's introduction. An unsigned photocopy of a letter dated 20th June, 2003 and consisting of about 125 words from Eric Stephens to Kate Clodd written in response to her card in which he thanks her for her father's speech and says he found the occasion 'very moving.' He was surprised at 'a number of unexpected (to me) booksellers who turned up. Alan was certainly one for keeping his activities in separate compartments.' Photocopies of Alan Clodd's obituary in The Times 30.12.02 and The Independent 26.12.02 (also one original newspaper cutting of The Independent obituary) loosely inserted. Harold Alexander (Alan) Clodd (1918 Ð 2002), Irish born publisher, book collector and dealer, grandson of the writer Edward Clodd. With Kathleen Raine's encouragement he established the Enitharmon Press which became known for its fine-quality editions of work by poets and novelists who had often been overlooked by more commercial publishers. An exquisite copy of this poetry compilation. A first limited edition of this work, limited to two hundred and fifty copies, of which this i…s numbered twenty-two. This copy was one of the first fifty copies printed, thus it includes the matching slipcase and four signed poems by David Gascoyne, John Heath-Stubbs, Harold Pinter, and Kathleen Raine. Compiled by Steven Halliwell, with a tribute by Jeremy Reed. This copy is also signed by Alan Clodd, Steven Halliwell, and Jeremy Reed. This volume explores the history of the Enitharmon Press, an independent British publishing house specialising in artists' books, poetry, limited editions, and original prints. It was founded by Alan Clodd in 1967, who named it after one of William Blake's character. Illustrated with seven charming prints tipped in to the volume. In publisher's original green cloth binding. Held in publisher's green cloth slipcase that has some minor shelf wear. Externally, in lovely condition with no shelf wear. Included suite of poems in fine condition.
