The library bookplate & sticker, marker from bookplate transferred to front flyleaf, spine faded & scuffed, library call # on spine. Otto Johann Anton Skorzeny (12 June 1908 - 5 July 1975) was an Austrian-born German intelligence officer and commando who served as an SS-Obersturmbannführer within the Waffen-SS during the Second World War. Over the course of the conflict, he was implicated in several notable operations, among them the removal from power of the Hungarian regent Miklós Horthy and the raid on Gran Sasso, which secured the liberation of Benito Mussolini from captivity. Skorzeny additionally commanded Operation Greif, an initiative in which German personnel infiltrated Allied positions while disguised in enemy uniforms. This latter action subsequently led to his prosecution in 1947 before the Dachau Military Tribunal on charges of violating the 1907 Hague Convention; he was, however, acquitted of these charges. Following his escape from an internment facility in 1948, Skorzeny sought refuge on a farm in Bavaria and subsequently resided in Salzburg and Paris before ultimately establishing himself in Francoist Spain. In 1953, he assumed the role of military advisor to the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, and he is also reported to have served in an advisory capacity to the Argentine president Juan Perón, although this latter claim remains a matter of some uncertainty. Skorzeny died on 5 July 1975 in Madrid, at the age of sixty-seven. Otto Skorzeny, Germanys top commando in World War II, is one of the most famous men in the history of special forces. His extraordinary wartime career was one of high risk and adventure and in this book he tells the full story. Skorzeny quickly proved his worth in Yugoslavia and then Russia. In 1942 he was awarded the Iron Cross, and in April 1943 he was promoted to captain and named Chief of Germany's Special Troops, Existing or to be Created in the Future. When Mussolini was imprisoned in Italy in 1943, it was Skorzeny who successfully led the daring glider rescue, winning the Knights Cross and promotion as a result. Skorzeny's talents were brought into play again when he was sent to Budapest to stop the Hungarian regent Admiral Horthy from signing a peace with Stalin in 1944. Now dubbed the most dangerous man in Europe by the Allies he was awarded the German Cross in Gold. A few months later he took a critical role in the Ardennes offensive with a controversial plan to raise a brigade disguised as Americans with captured Sherman tanks. His captured colleagues spread a false rumor that he was planning to assassinate Eisenhower, who was consequently confined to his headquarters for weeks. Skorzenys memoirs vividly depict commando action and are a key addition to special forces literature. Derived from a Kirkus review: The former Chief of the Nazi Commandos recounts some of his most thrilling missions -- freeing Mussolini in 1943 from Badoglio's guards, heading a secret army that forced Nazi demands on Petain and the Vichy Government and spiked attempts to spirit the old Marshal out of France, and overthrowing Admiral Horty's government in Hungary when that country signed a separate peace with Russia. First Edition [stated]. Presumed first printing.…
