Paperback. Condición: New. An inclusive and innovative account of religious ethical thinking and acting in the world. Rather than merely applying existing forms of philosophical ethics, Religious Ethics defines the meaning of the field and presents a distinct and original method for ethical reflection through comparisons of world religious traditions. Written by leading scholars and educators in the field, this unique volume offers an innovative approach that reveals how religions concur and differ on moral matters, and provides practical guidance on thinking and living ethically. The book's innovative method-integrating descriptive, normative, practical, fundamental, and metaethical dimensions of reflection-enables a far more complex and nuanced exploration of religious ethics than any single philosophical language, method, or theory can equal. First introducing the task of religious ethics, the book moves through each of the five dimensions of reflection to compare concepts such as good and evil, perplexity and wisdom, truth and illusion, and freedom and bondage in various theological contexts. Guides readers on understanding, assessing, and comparing the moral teachings and practices of world religionsApplies a disciplined, scholarly approach to the subject of religious ethicsExplores the distinctions between religious ethics and moral philosophyProvides a methodology which can be applied to comparative ethics for various religionsCompares religious traditions to illuminate each of the five dimensions of ethical and moral reflection Religious Ethics: Meaning and Method will help anyone interested in the relation between religion and ethics in the modern world, including those involved in general and comparative religion studies, religious and comparative ethics, and moral theory.…

Paperback. Condición: New. By carefully listening to the words and wisdom of survivors, this volume focuses on ways forward in the work of creating an atmosphere of accountability, healing, and trust in today's church. In March of 2022, practitioners of psychology, law, and theology, gathered at the University of Notre Dame for a major conference to explore practical strategies to increase accountability, promote healing, and rebuild trust in the life of the Catholic Church in the wake of the clergy sexual abuse crisis. The essays in this volume share the fruits of those days spent reflecting on recent research on these challenging issues. The result is a hopeful resource in service to survivors and to those who minister with them through listening, giving voice, and bearing witness to the wounded body of Christ. The challenges of addressing the range of problems caused by the abuse crisis are great, affecting the work of ministry in profound ways. From the training of future ministers-lay and ordained-to the exercise of the church's various ministries in parishes, education and direct service, the abuse crisis calls out for a response to the questions posed by abuse survivors and those who accompany and hope to serve them. Organized around three themes-accountability, healing, and trust-the contributors to this volume probe the deepest understanding of the church's mission and name the most significant divisions in the response to the sexual abuse crisis. By carefully listening to the words and wisdom of survivors, this volume focuses on ways forward and treats clergy, laypeople, scholars, and ministers as partners in the work of creating an atmosphere of accountability, healing, and trust in the post-abuse-revelation church. Contributors include: Melanie Susan Barrett - Kimberly Hope Belcher - Jennifer Beste - Julia Canonico - Peter Capretto David A. Hardback. Condición: New. Religions respond to capitalism, democracy, industrialization, feminism, individualism, and the phenomenon of globalization in a variety of ways. Some religions conform to these challenges, if not capitulate to them; some critique or resist them, and some work to transform the modern societies they inhabit. In this unique collection of critical essays, scholars of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Native American thought explore the tension between modernization and the family, sexuality, and marriage traditions of major religions in America. Contributors examine how various belief systems have confronted changing attitudes regarding the meaning and purpose of sex, the definition of marriage, the responsibility of fathers, and the status of children. They also discuss how family law in America is beginning to acknowledge certain religious traditions and how comparative religious ethics can explain and evaluate diverse family customs. Studies concerning the impact of religious thought and behavior on American society have never been more timely or important.Recent global events cannot be fully understood without comprehending how belief systems function and the many ways they can be employed to the benefit and detriment of societies. Responding to this critical need, American Religions and the Family presents a comprehensive portrait of religious cultures in America and offers secular society a pathway for appreciating religious tradition.…
