Through close analysis of Hsün Yüeh's writings and career, the study offers an interpretation of the political and intellectual preoccupations of the educated elite in early medieval China. Hsün Yüeh served at the court of Emperor Hsien, the last Han emperor, during a period of profound political instability and dynastic transition, which marked the beginning of the long Age of Disunity in China. He saw the fabric of the empire torn and ruptured by palace eunuchs, frontier generals, regional warlords and local magnates. The book examines his two major works: the Han-chi, a chronicle of the Former Han dynasty, and the Shen-chien, a collection of political and philosophical reflections. Through these texts, the author explores how Confucian intellectuals grappled with questions of political legitimacy, moral governance and the role of the scholar in times of disorder. The analysis situates Hsün Yüeh within broader currents of Han Confucian thought while tracing his responses to the specific crises of his era. This approach illuminates the tensions between Confucian ideals of virtuous rule and the political realities faced by officials serving weak or compromised rulers. The work remains valuable for students of Chinese intellectual history, particularly those interested in the transformation of Confucianism during the Han-Wei transition period and the ways classical traditions adapted to changing political circumstances.
