Dodd, M.A., Chaplain to the King, featuring a sheaf of wheat bound by a serpent, surmounted by a bird holding arrows, and the motto, "Wisdom and Armies" on scrolling banners. Executed in a lively mid-18th century English rococo style, with bold line work and decorative flourishes. A well-composed and symbolically rich personal ex-libris reflecting clerical learning and royal service. The celebrated Dr. Dodd, author and tutor to Lord Chesterfield. He was executed at Tyburn in 1777 for forgery. Very good condition with light age-toning and faint spotting to the paper, consistent with period. Impression crisp and well-inked; margins intact. No tears or repairs. Overall, an attractive and uncommon English armorial bookplate.

Internally the errata leaf, title-page, and last leaf blank verso are slightly dusty, otherwise the text leaves are entirely clean and only faintly tanned. A very nice and sturdy copy ] . . .
