Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) Rock is a world-renowned, World Heritage-listed Aboriginal rock art site located within an outlying sandstone formation of the Arnhem Land Escarpment in Kakadu… National Park, Northern Territory. It serves as an ancient shelter and outdoor cultural museum, documenting over 20,000 years of Indigenous occupation, spiritual traditions, and historical events. The site is traditionally owned and jointly managed by the Gun-djeihmi-speaking Bininj/Mungguy people alongside Parks Australia. George Chaloupka was a pioneering expert on Australian Aboriginal rock art who extensively documented Burrungkuy (Nourlangie Rock) in Kakadu National Park. He published the seminal 40-page book titled Burrunguy: Nourlangie Rock in 1982 to detail the cultural background, mythology, and techniques behind the ancient.The Connection: Chaloupka and Burrungkuy. The Book: Published via Northart, Chaloupka's book Burrunguy: Nourlangie Rock acts as a crucial cultural guide. It details First Nations x-ray art styles, techniques, and Dreamtime stories—such as the legend of Namarrkon (the Lightning Man). Naming History: The region's indigenous name is Burrungkuy (traditionally belonging to the Gun-djeihmi speaking people).
