Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Cecil Madden was a pioneer at the birth of television and one of the legendary Fools on the Hill. He produced and broadcast the world's first ever television programme "Here's Looking at You" from Alexandra Palace. During the second world war, when television was suspended, he broadcast dail…y and nightly radio shows to the forces. Vera Lynn became the forces sweetheart by singing on his show "Starlight" and slept in the crowded theatre to ensure she never missed a show because of the nightly bombing raids. He was the last person to speak to Glenn Miller before he died and tried to persuade him not to fly in such bad weather. He shepherded Bing Crosby around London through the adoring crowds while V2 bombs flew overhead. He discovered the ten year old Petula Clark who came to the show to send a message to her soldier uncle and gave an impromptu performance with the full orchestra. He also discovered and named the Beverley Sisters. Front cover image: 1941 Cecil Madden on the roof of the Criterion Theatre, Piccadilly. He lived underground in the star dressing room as Head of Overseas Entertainment after his office at Broadcasting House was destroyed by a bomb. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

"In his introduction to this book Mr. Madden lets the late Conan Doyle tell in his own words the familiar story of how Sherlock Holmes came into being. In the chapters that follow, fifteen British writers of detective stories introduce us to their own brain-children and tell how they were born. In most cases these brain children are detectives but there are two notable exceptions: Dr. Fu Manchu and The Saint. The former, as Sax Rohmer's readers well know, is a Chinese of high rank who plans to bring the whole world into subjection to China, and more particularly to himself, and the latter is an adventurer in crime, a latter-day Robin Hood. Each of these malefactors has fought countless battles with his detective nemesis, and each appears to be good for many another bout. Their creators tell here how these characters were conceived and what their authors think of them. The other characters introduced by their authors are: Bull-Dog Drummond, by "Sapper"; Hanaud, by A. E. W. Mason; Gun Cotton, by Rupert Grayson; Tiger Standish, by Sydney Horler; Professor Wells, by Francis D. Grierson; Chief Inspector French, by Freeman Wills Crofts; Mr. Fortune, by H. C. Bailey; Trent, by E. C. Bentley; Phineas Spinnet, by Andrew Soutar; Superintendent Wilson, by G. D. H. and M. Cole; Dr. Thorndyke, by R. Austin Freeman; Dr. Eustace Hailey, by Anthony Wynne, and The Scarlet Pimpernel, by Baroness Orczy. The several chapters give an interesting view of the various ways in which authors go about creating their characters". (New York Times Review December 22, 1935". Rare. I have not seen another copy of this book for at least 20 years. Further photographs available upon request.
