Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. This book covers the work and life of W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp, the first European artist in Bali. It contains images and descriptions of his artworks and the Balinese culture he documented. Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp, often referred to as W.O.J.N., was a versatile Dutch artist and explorer who made a name for himself in the early twentieth century primarily through his pioneering work on the island of Bali. As a self-taught artist, he worked in various disciplines, including painting, drawing, sculpture, etching, and lithography. In addition, he was involved in the design of book covers and ex-libris, which underlines his broad interest in graphic art. Nieuwenkamp was known not only for his artistic qualities but also as a writer, architect, ethnologist, and collector of East Asian art, which gave a special cultural context to his oeuvre. His travels to Indonesia, and Bali in particular, were groundbreaking for a European artist at that time. He was one of the first to capture and appreciate the beauty and cultural richness of this island, thus playing an important role in introducing Balinese art and culture to Europe. His work is of great value to collectors interested in the cross-pollination between Western artistic traditions and East Asian sources of inspiration. This makes all editions and documentation around Nieuwenkamp relevant for lovers of cultural history and interwar art. W.O.J. NIEUWENKAMP First European Artist in BALI.…

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. Paperback. In original tan printed wrappers, 96 pp., 4 black and white photographic plates, and very large folding color soil survey map of the Visalia area at rear. The map, based on U. S. Geological Survey topographic coverage, shows cultural details (individual buildings, roads, railroads, etc.) in addition to soil types and distribution within the region, necessary for delineating important and desirable agricultural areas. Descriptions and characteristics of soil classifications shown on the map are provided in the report together with information about principal and lesser crops grown at the time of the survey. An early edition and possibly the first soil survey of the Visalia area. Later soil surveys provide more maps and finer details but lack the visual appeal, simplicity, and historical content of this earlier large color map. *** Condition: Complete as issued. Ex-library with ink stamp and call numbers on front wrapper, else the booklet is internally clean with no other markings. Removed from bound volume with roughness and chipping to wrappers along the bound edge, loose or detaching pages, and stitch holes along the left margin not affecting the map. The map has a couple of short opening tears and is bright, crisp, and clean.…

Couverture rigide. Condición: Comme neuf. Edition originale. Paris 2012. 1 Volume/1. -- New -- Hardback quarto size (.28,5 x 23,5 cm ). ----- 328 pages. The main essay takes the readers on a historical journey to experience the continuity and evolution of Indonesian jewellery in the region. Maps of the Indonesian archipelago and specific regions show the location of the ethnic groups. Nearly 600 photographs, organised by region and ethnic group, give a glimpse of the scale and range of jewellery. The Introduction provides a glimpse into the lifestyle and social systems of Indonesia's indigenous people. ******************** "" Ethnic Jewellery from Indonesia : Continuity and Evolution is a compelling introduction to the little-known and visually-powerful body adornments of the ethnic peoples of Indonesia's outer islands, including Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, Sumba and Maluku. The history of the jewellery is told from the perspective of the materials used, including gold, silver, brass, ivory, shell and animal teeth. Illustrated with nearly 600 photographs of rare jewellery amassed over 30 years by collector Manfred Giehmann, this book explores the depth and breadth of an ancient and magnificent tradition of the Indonesian people. It will provide information on the origin, meaning and purpose of the jewellery, as well as unique insights into the people who crafted and wore the jewellery for ritual or ceremonial functions. Ethnic Jewellery : Continuity and Evolution is a definitive work on the subject and a testimony to the living traditions of cultures usually shrouded in mystery. ************************* ref od654w.…

Hardcover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. 163 pp., illustrations, bibliography, index. "Put together over a period of twenty years, the Huntington Miller Collection of Keris and Keris Hilts is a tour de force. The emphasis here is on the sculptural aesthetic and historical importance of this unique art form from throughout Indonesia: Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi and beyond. It is story that spans centuries and the rise and fall of countless kingdoms and polities. The hilts range from minimalistic forms to the abstract to opulent royal weapons beautifully crafted to project prestige and wealth. So, too, they carry with them the aura of mystery and magic of the islands of Southeast Asia, which captured the imaginations of foreigners even before the beginning of the Age of Spices, when the perilous journey from Europe to Indonesia took a year to complete. With a terse and informative text written by Indonesian art expert, Bruce W. Carpenter, this is a cultural and artistic voyage that delights the eye and stimulates the mind.".…
