Signed by musician/composer Joseph Packales on the front endpaper. Also, with an autograph note signed from his widow on a separate sheet of stationery, saying her late husband ?used this book extensively.? He also taught composition and theory courses at The University of Southern Maine Alban Berg [1885?1935] was an Austrian composer of the Second Viennese School. His compositional style combined Romantic lyricism with the twelve-tone technique. Soft cover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. Minor creasing at top right corner of cover. Glossy and clean covers. Clean and tight pages. The English composer Cornelius Cardew [1936-81) was among the most adventurous, controversial and innovative musicians of his generation. After an initial association with Stockhausen and the European avant-garde, he became engaged with the aesthetic ideas of John Cage and the New York School. A leading figure in the experimental music of the 1960s, Cardew is widely acknowledged as a pioneer of indeterminacy, graphic notation, free improvisation and performer involvement. As well as extending the boundaries of music in unprecedented directions, he enquired deeply into its social relevance and meaning. His passionate and untiring quest for wider social significance led him eventually to become a political activist. In the 1970s he repudiated his earlier experimental work and adopted a more traditional musical language. He joined a revolutionary Marxist-Leninist party and devoted himself to political action, at the same time searching for ways to express his commitment in musical terms. At the height of his political involvement he died tragically at the age of 45, killed by a hit-and-run driver near his home in East London This Reader brings together a diverse collection of Cardew's major essays and writings from different stages of his career, together with commentaries by other writers associated with his work. It reflects developments, changes and contradictions in his thinking about music from the late 1950s to the end of his life. As a companion volume to John Tilbury's biography — Corneius Cardew a life unfinished, Copula, 2006 (ISBN 0 9525492 3 9) it provides essential material for the study of Cardew's life and ideas; it also makes a significant contribution to discussion of the wider issues involved in the relationship between music, ideology and political commitment.…

"Any direction modern music will take in England will come about only through Cardew, because of him, by way of him. If the new ideas in music are felt today as a movement in England, it's because he acts as a moral force, a moral centre." Morton Feldman's assessment of Cardew's importance - (as Cage said of Satie 'It's not a question of his relevance. He's indispensable) - took on prophetic status when the Scratch Orchestra was founded in 1969…" from front flap.…

Paperback. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Book. Rare complete run of Living Arts Magazine (3 issues published 1963-4),edited by Theo Crosby and John Bodley. Black & white printed in glossy wraps. Crosby associated himself with ICA in the early 60s and in 1963, under Croby's lead, the ICA exhibited Living Cities, to foreground the urban theories of the young Archigram group. The magazine therefore becomes an intrinsic part of the new international vision set out by Crosby and others, overlapping with other landmark publications of the era/movewment such as This Is Tomorrow, and Archigram. Autumn '60 for Ochestra by Cornelius Cardew, Photographs by Robert Freeman and Letter from the Airport by Carl Nesjar feature in Volume 1. Volume 2 includes : Sculptures and Statement by Peter Startup, Urbane Image by Richard Hamilton and Living City by Peter Cook, Dennis Compton et al. Volume 3 includes THe Allegorical Situation by Bernard Cohen, David Sylvester interviewing David Smith, Communication and Symbolic Value by Gillo Dorfles, THe Atavism of the Short-Distance Minicyclist by Reyner Banham and review of Living City by Robert Maxwell. The 50 page Living City section of Volume 2 includes THE EXHIBITION - EXPERIENCE 19 JUNE - 2 AUGUST 1963 described and expanded by it's designers, with Manifesto, Introduction & ket to the numerous pages of illustrations, design and texts. Amongst the many contributions are THE KEY TO THE VITALITY OF THE CITY by Peter Cook, CITY SYNTHESIS by Dennis Crompton, Total Exhibition Structure, MOVEMENT GLOOP, and FINAL NOTES ON THE LIVING CITY. Condition - the plastic cover tends to bubble. A fault uniform in all copies (& apparent in all 9 copies of issue 2 exhibited in Tate Modern Hamilton retrospective, 2014). These copies have some of that bubble effect but are the best I have seen with only a little near spine. Each rubber stamped neatly on colophon page "Michael Farr (Design Integration) 97 Jerymn Street London " (a prestigious London design company). Slight wear to issue 1 cover. General minor handling. Copies are prone to curling of covers due to plastic overlay, but being housed in a homemade cardboard slipcase these copies are better than usual. Minor rubbing to colophon pages (from inside flap printed image). Very difficult to find a set in this kind of condition. VG++/ near fine.…

Condición: Very Good +. Pages 1, 2, 3 (Complete Set), Edited by David Briers. Pages can be seen as a more refined and less chaotic publication than Writers Forum productions of the time. Emphasising Briers' knowledge and connections with established artists, it can be argued that it was ahead of its time, though Zurbrugg's inclusion in no. 1 emphasises that it did see itself as a reaction against narrow concrete: "The aim of Pages is to publicise the avant-garde, and by doing so to prove that it does not exist except as a name" (Foreward, Pages No. 1, David Briers). Pages No. 1, Autumn, 1970. David Briers (ed.), 35pp., 210 x 295 mm. Printed black, white and blue on white stock, stapled into colour printed wraps. Includes a loose inserted postcard by Richard Hamilton 'Postmark' (1970). Contents include: dsh's 'parameters and paramitas' with other contributions from Diter Rot, Jochen Gerz, Jiri Valoch, Tom Phillips, Mauricio Kagel, Joseph Beuys. Cover image by Herman Makkink 'Christ Unlimited'. Pages No. 2, Winter, 1970. David Briers (ed.), 37pp., 210 x 295 mm. Printed black, white on white and green paper, stapled into colour printed wraps. 39pp. Includes Nicholas Zurbrugg's article 'Towards the death of concrete poetry' and controbutions from Jiri Valoch, John Furnival, Richard Demarco, Cornelius Cardew, Ian Breakwell, Robert Filliou and others. Cover image by Herman Damen. Pages No. 3, 1972. 23pp., 210 x 295 mm. Cover image by Robin Crozier. Ref: Allen, Artist's Magazines - An Alternative Space For Art, MIT Press, 2011 p283. Condition: some wear and marks to covers, some foxing to top of front covers of issues 1 & 3, no writing or tears. Overall: VG+.
