Añadir al carrito1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged grey paper. He notes an advertisement for Campbell's 'Lives of the Chief Justices' in that morning's Athenaeum. 'Had I been earlier aware of the preparation of the work it would have afforded me much pleasure in offering for your Lordships acceptance a Copy of the probate Copy Will of the Lord Chief Justice Fitzjames which I have in my collection of M.S.S. &c.' The will is very long and contains 'much curious matter'. Although it may be too late for any notice of the will in Campbell's book, 'yet a copy shall be very much at your Lordships service, should your Lordship desire to possess it'. A postscript reads 'I sometime ago sent a Copy to Mr Foss. [i.e. Edward Foss, author of the 'Judges of England']'.…

Añadir al carrito2pp., 4to. An excellent letter, stylish and charming, and a lucky survival. In poor condition, apparently as a result of fire damage: with wear and chipping repaired with archival tape. Campbell begins: 'It was my intention when you were amidst the shelves of my library to have presented you with a copy of my poems - but I was prevented from doing so by a circumstance similar to what the mayor of a small town in England pleaded in excuse to Queen Elizabeth for not ringing the bells on her Majesty's entrance into the town - He said they had nineteen reasons for not ringing their bells - the first of which was that they had no bells to ring - and her Majesty dispensed with the other 18 reasons - I had copy of my poems therewith to present you - I intended to be sure to send to my publisher for one - but the good intention, like many others, went out of my foolish head. I hope the copy I now send will reach you in time before you sail -'. He continues with a quite beautiful expression of good wishes for the recipient's journey back to America: 'And prosperously may you sail my dear friend - speedily may you arrive at the goal of your wishes - and embrace the friend that is dearer to you than your own life - '. He has not read 'both of the charming little American brochures' which he sent him, 'but I have read Channing's - It is a glorious production[.] What simplicity of eloquence and rationation'. Here he quotes Thomas Chatterton, before concluding: 'Believe me my dear Sir that no man holds in more veneration than I do all that is respectable in your United States - and that is not saying a little - and it is not a slender compliment to you to say that you are a most interesting representative of that country - | I shall ever remain | with gratifying recollections | Your obliged friend | [signed] Thomas Campbell -'.…

Añadir al carritoAn attractive item, in good condition, lightly aged and spotted. On one side of a piece of 17.5 x 25 cm landscape paper, with the autograph writing on the right-hand side and the 15 x 10 cm print of a studio portrait laid down on the left-hand side. Caine was a striking and instantly-recognisable individual, and the photograph shows him in characteristic style, bare-headed in his usual dress of long double-breasted coat with white cravat, staring intently at the camera, with a book in his right hand, and his right hand draped across his left thigh, his left leg being elevated on a chair. The inscription is signed 'Hall Caine | 9/ Nov 1905.', and is headed 'To | Lady Campbell Clarke.' Clearly in response to a request for an autograph, Caine has written out a celebrated four-line stanza from Tennyson's 'In Memoriam', beginning 'I hold it truth with him who sings'. The photograph is possibly the one taken by George Charles Beresford in 1904; it is certainly not one of the other 25 images of Caine in the National Portrait Gallery collection. Lady Campbell Clarke was part of the circle of Caine and his friend Bram Stoker, author of Dracula.…
