In 1929 a Centenary history to celebrate the 100th year of European settlement of Western Australia was produced by the Bruce Rock Road Board, one of the first community histories ever undertaken in the State. This innovative move was furthered when one of the earliest formal studies of a rural community was undertaken at the district's expense by John K. Ewers, a respected Western Australian writer. Published in 1959, Bruce Rock - The Story of a District was a serious and welcomed study of the development of Bruce Rock. Ewer's book has now been updated by Avon Lovell, using materials that has become available since the surge in historical interest that accompanied the 1979 "Way-79" celebration of the 150th year of European settlement of the State. This new book details patterns of life which have been affected by methods of cropping, the impact of computer technology and the effects of international financial tides upon the entire community. Mr. Lovell has the assistance of other writers in the district and this revised history is, in essence, a compilation of the work of many people and who have shown a keen interest in their own family history and the development of their society. Condición: Very Good. 24th edition, 368pp, photographs in the text, adverts at front and back, folding map, two folding views & one map of Ilfracombe, paper wraps. The contents are a touch dog eared, the wraps are a little grubby & worn with a touch of loss to the head & foot of the spine. The start of the handbook is given over to general information and description of the steamers in the fleet, the remainder is a comprehensive topographical guide to the Bristol Channel ports and resorts - Bristol, Weston super Mare, Ilfracombe, Minehead, Cardiff, Newport etc. For over 50 years Campbell's 'White Funnel Fleet' paddle steamers were to be seen proudly plying the Bristol Channel but by the end of the 1950s the excursion trade was in terminal decline and the company went into receivership in 1959. It was sold as a going concern and limped on with two steamers until the mid-1960s when they were replaced by motor vessels. The final end came in the early 1980s. Oblong folio. 17 x 9.5 in. [13 leaves (unnumbered).], on thick gray-green textured boards, all mounted on linen hinges at gutter margin, with 35 tipped-in silver gelatin photographs sized from 4.5 x 9.5 in. up to 6.75 x 14 in. Full green morocco, gilt lettering stamped on front cover, decorative Italian patterned endpapers (minor scuffing & wear to fore-edges, very light sunning to front cover), still a VG exemplar. This excellent souvenir photo album depicts the golf tourney hosted by the Youngstown Country Club in honor of Campbell's (1854-1933) 72nd birthday in 1926. The opening photo depicts all the participants and dignitaries at the Country Club, followed by images of players on the greens. The 18-hole course was built on the 131-acre Holland Farm, and designed by Walter Travis, featuring a $ 60,000 Clubhouse, which was noted for elegance and model comfort. These images depict the quintessential 1920's golfing excursion, including those of players, the greens, the roughs, caddies, and even an image of what appears to be Walter Travis himself taking a turn on the links. The year before in 1925, the Youngstown Country Club had hosted the 25th Open Championship of the Western Golf Assoc., and legends of the game including Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, and Tommy Armour III all played the course. Campbell was an enthusiastic golfer until his death, holding a similar tourney in 1929 on his 75th birthday. He had begun his business career by forming the Youngstown Ice Co. in the summer of 1884, and by 1890 was hired as manager of the Trumbull Iron Co. later consolidated into Union Iron & Steel Co. In 1901 he founded Youngstown Steel and Tube Co., but after a failed merger at the beginning of the Great Depression, his health declined. See: Ted Heineman, James A.
