Seltene, noch frühe Ausgabe des erstmals 1610…erschienenen und zuletzt 1666 aufgelegten Handbuchs. - Der thüringische Komponist, Musiktheoretiker und Astronom Sethus Calvisius (Seth Kallwitz, 1556-1617), Sohn eines Tagelöhners, genoß in Magdeburg eine humanistische Schulbildung und wurde 1582 Kantor der Fürstenschule Pforta, wo er 12 Jahr lang wirkte und "den besonderen musikalischen Ruf dieser Anstalt begründet[e]" (MGG 2, 675). "Er hielt viel auf die Astrologie, und wolte durch den Calculum astronomicum gefunden haben, daß ihm Anno 1602 an einem gewissen Tage ein groß Unglück begegenen würde. Ob er sich nun gleich an solchem Tage ungemein in acht nahm, so soll ihm doch ein Zufall begegenet seyn, dadurch er ein hinckend Bein bekommen" (Jöcher). Die "schwere Knieverletzung, als deren Folge er zeitlebens 'claudicans' blieb, [fesselte] ihn über ein Jahr ans Bett" (MGG), schuf ihm aber auch die Muße für schriftstellerische Arbeiten. Sein vorliegendes Spätwerk ist ein nach Sachgruppen geordnetes deutsch-lateinisches Synonymenlexikon in der Art eines Dornseiff, Roget oder Textor'schen Thesaurus. Unter den lateinischen Sachgruppen finden sich deutsche Lemmata (Wörter und Ausdrücke), denen die lateinischen Entsprechungen, oft auch ganze Wendungen und loci communes umfassend, beigestellt sind. - Papierbedingt teils etwas gebräunt; vereinzelt minimal wasserrandig; einige kl. Am Ende des Reformationszeitalters gelang es Calvisius, in seiner 1592 in Erfurt erschienenen Tonsatzlehre MELOPOIIA die im Zuge der Renaissance wiederentdeckten, lateinisch und griechisch formulierten Erkenntnisse zur Musiklehre nicht nur zusammenzufassen, sondern diese auch mit den aktuellen kompositorischen Entwicklungen der Frankoflämischen Schule, wie sie etwa in den Lehrschriften des Kapellmeisters am Dom San Marco in Venetia, Gioseffo Zarlino (Le Istitutioni Harmoniche, 1558, usw.) greifbar wurden, zusammenzuführen. Calvisius war wesentlich daran beteiligt, die Zarlino-Rezeption, die Hohe Schule des Kontrapunkts, nach Deutschland zu vermitteln.
