The firm was founded in 1830 by Edward Bibby who purchased the Conder Mill and specialised in the production of cattle feed. As the firm expanded over the century and into the 20th century, by 1963 the main business was in animal feeds, egg and broiler chicken production, oilseed refining and oil processing, grocery, catering and bakery products.
