Informal relations have always been with us, they have always mattered. What is new is the range of activities in which they now matter, and the emerging clarity we have about how they create advantage for certain people at the expense of others. This is done by brokerage and closure. Ronald S. Burt builds upon his celebrated work in this area to explore the nature of brokerage and closure. Brokerage is the activity of people who live at the intersection of social worlds, who have a vision advantage of seeing and developing good ideas, an advantage which can be seen in their compensation, recognition, and the responsibility they're entrusted with in comparison to their peers. Closure is the tightening of coordination in a closed network of people, and people who do this do well as a complement to brokers because of the trust and alignment they create. Brokerage and Closure explores how these elements work together to define social capital, showing how in the business world reputation has come to replace authority, pursued opportunity assignment, and reward has come to be associated with achieving competitive advantage in a social order of continuous disequilibrium. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

After that, Fate introduced countless events which remain, to this day, fodder for paranormal documentaries and investigation. This Fall 1948 issue - the third issue ever - bears one of the handful of truly iconic Fate covers, that being "The Red River Witch" (see scan). 12mo, illustrated staple-bound wraps, 128 pp. A Near Fine copy - and this one is as near fine as near fine gets, with just touch micro-edgewear and an almost indiscernible degree of color fade as you look toward the spine. See scans. Standard toning to the interior newsprint-grade pages, but these are supple, clean and and unchipped. Highest Grade, particularly for a periodical which often shows substantial wear from use. Emily and John Visher, who were the founding "parents" of the Stepfamily Association of America, referred to it as the definitive work on stepfamily interventions. It was apparent that it had perfect… utility for stepcouples especially when they were working with a professional counselor. Recently the book went out of print. The authors consider it far too important a work to let it disappear and obtained the rights back. In this digital age it is being given new life and has been redesigned as a dual use book for partnerships between stepcouples and helping professionals. The model utilized is called a normalizing model in that stepfamilies are considered to be normal families undergoing multiple adjustments at the same time. There is an economy of intervention using this model and it avoids the extensive data gathering often associated with the medical model where pathology is assumed. Much of the data was gathered by the authors in their specialized practice with stepfamilies. The power of the model is seen in the fact that these families often arrived in terrible distress, yet the average number of sessions was only eight. This item is printed on demand.
