The transfer consisted of two large bronze relief panels designed by American realism artist Thomas Eakins (the originals were replaced by exact duplicate castings).The two bronzes are "The Continental Army Crossing The Delaware River" and "The Opening of the Fight", depicting two crucial moments of the Christmas night, 1776 action by Washington and his Continentals that surprised the Hessian outpost at Trenton. The bronze panels were first installed on the monument in 1895.…

Issued in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the Trenton Battle Monument. Two of the original bronze plaques on the monument were designed and crafted by American realist Thomas Eakins (1844-1916). These plaques (and the third, by Karl H. Niehaus) were moved for better preservation to the New Jersey State Museum in 1973. Reproductions were placed in return on the monument. This book recounts the Battle of Trenton in December 1776, the progress of the American Revolution afterward, the history of the monument and the panels, Eakins' bronzes, and Eakins's life as well.
