Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The sudden death of Gordon W. Richards in late September 1998 brought a premature end to a legendary training career which had seen him rise from obscurity to national fame as master of his profession. Consigned to racing's scrap-heap with a broken back at the age of 29, he scraped a living as a livery stable proprietor and horse-dealer in a remote part of North umberland until, five years later, he 'discovered' Playlord and a new dawn broke. Rugged, demanding, often outspoken, sometimes ruthless but never lacking in humour, Gordon made relentless progress through the training ranks. 'The Boss', as he was widely known, liked to run his stable his own way. Horses, not humans, headed the pecking order, as many famous riders and owners discovered to their cost. Few escaped unscathed, but in over 30 years he employed only six stable jockeys, and two of these, Ron Barry and Jonjo O'Neill, gained championship honours. The Boss charts the successes of the man who twice saddled more than a hundred winners in a single season and who scooped the pool in the Aintree Grand National on two occasions. This enthralling biography, written with full co-operation of Richards himself, provides a compelling insight into the forces that drove him to become one of the most respected trainers in the world. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Recently relieved of his employment and with a wedding to arrange, Jefferson Tweedy isn't overburdened with worldly success. Indeed he is refreshingly free from it. But having studied the 'smoke and mirrors' management techniques of his former bosses at Mycroft, Pigott and Welch, he feels ready for a new challenge. Fortunately, his rather intimidating father-in-law to be has got just the job for him. All he's got to do is oversee the entire nation's examination system. How hard can it be? Everything Happens in August is a satire on the modern education system and a study in the noble art of bluffing. It sits in the great tradition of the English comic novel; take one generally well meaning central character, place him in an entirely unsuitable job and watch him lie, cheat and hide in the toilets to protect his position. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. …

Hardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. Jungle John: A Book of the Big-Game Jungles by John Budden was published by Longmans, Green and Co. in 1954. This 57-year-old, 5 1/2" X 7 1/4", 304-page offering is an ex-library copy in G condition. There are some of the standard library markings observed, fairly modest shelf wear is seen along random spots on either side of the volume's spine as well as at top and bottom edges of same, there is some yellowing of endpapers front and back as well as text's pages, two strips of what might be portions of the inside flaps of this offering's original dust jacket are attached to the front paste down and loose end pages, and there is, finally, a noticeable diagonal crease in the lower-right corner of the front cover board(said crease does not break or show any disturbance in the surface color of the front cover. From front paste down page attachment, "This famous book for boys now becomes available in a new edition, with all the original illustrations retained. Jungle John was an immense success throughout the world when it first appeared, and many people who were brought up on these tales now want their own youngsters to have the book. One suspects that not a few of these altruistic parents, who have lost or mislaid their copies, themselves wish to renew acquaintances with the human and animal characters they encountered in these pages! John is the son of a Forest Officer in India, and this book contains the stories of his adventures in the jungle with his father and old Damroo, and Moti, the little girl. Here is much of hunting and jungle-lore and the ways of the beasts that inhabit the Indian wild, written by one knowledgeable enthusiast, and set in drawings by another." Indeed, this intriguing collection of jungle/wild animal tales, which I'm wagering would still hold up quite well today, is wonderfully Illustrated with a generous collection of black and white sketches by Major-General H.J.P. Browne, C.B. NOTE: The other attachment, on the front loose end page, is a eulogy of Jungle John that appeared, originally, in the British humor magazine, Punch. Thank you very much!. H. J. P. Browne (ilustrador). …
