Foreword by John McCain. Epilogue by Band of Brothers actor Neal McDonough. Index. About the Author. DJ has minor wear and soiling. Minor edge soiling. Lynn Davis "Buck" Compton (December 31, 1921 - February 25, 2012) was an American jurist, police officer, and soldier. He served as a prosecutor and California Court of Appeal judge, and was the lead prosecutor in Sirhan Sirhan's trial for the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. He had served with the Los Angeles Police Department. During World War II, he was assigned to E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the 101st Airborne Division before Operation Overlord. During the company's action at Brécourt Manor, Compton and others, under the leadership of Lieutenant Richard Winters, assaulted a German battery of four 105 mm howitzers firing on Utah Beach, disabling the guns and routing the enemy. Compton was awarded the Silver Star for his action in disabling the guns. Episode two ("Day of Days") of the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers depicts this assault. During the battle, he threw a grenade that was said to have no arc and hit the German soldier on the back of the helmet. After being wounded, he returned to E Company in time for the siege in the Ardennes that became known as the Battle of the Bulge. Marcus Brotherton is a New York Times bestselling author and collaborative writer known for his books with high-profile public figures, humanitarians, inspirational leaders, and military personnel. Foreword by Senator John McCain: "The "Band of Brothers" story rightly took America by storm. In telling of that remarkable generation of men who risked everything - everything - to defeat the evils of fascism, the tale of Easy Company's bravery and valor has inspired its own, new generation of Americans. As rightly it should. America has relied throughout its history on the courage and honor of extraordinary citizens who, though they may come from the most ordinary of situations, stand up when duty calls them to act. The "Band of Brothers," that company of citizen-soldiers who helped our country wage and win World War II, represented that timeless virtue, the unselfish determination to serve a cause greater than our self-interest. In choosing this course, no matter its cost, an entire generation of men and women helped save the world from the evils of Nazism. Men and women, no matter how meager their origins or difficult their circumstances, possess within them the potential to alter the course of history. Buck Compton knew this, and this understanding shaped his life and destiny. He knew that there is no greatness without courage, no faith in country without devotion to fellows, no commitment to duty without service to others. Second Lieutenant Compton commanded the second platoon of Easy Company in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the famed 101st Airborne Division about which so many tales are told. In 1944 Buck Compton and others assaulted a German battery operating four 105 mm howitzers directed at Utah Beach, disabling the guns and routing the enemy. Buck was awarded the Silver Star for that action. Later, after being wounded in an operation aimed at seizing bridges in the Netherlands, Buck returned to his unit in time for the month-long siege that would in time become known as the Battle of the Bulge. Yet Buck's story doesn't end there. He returned from war to a life of public service, measuring success not only by victories on the battlefield but also through his conduct during seasons of peace. He focused on a career in law, became a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department and, ultimately, an Associate Justice on the California Appeals Court. In reaching a level of success in civilian life commensurate with his victories in battle, Buck Compton showed us the many ways in which Americans fight for justice. This memoir does his story the service it deserves. This book is the next best thing to.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book is about the role played by elections in processes of transition from authoritarianism and the subsequent consolidation of democratic rule. In this, the lessons drawn from the Spanish experience after the Franco dictatorship in 1975 are assessed. Many have pointed to the fact that the political elites that forged the transition from authoritarianism sought to institutionalise a set of societal divisions into manifest political cleavages through free and competitive elections in a sequential fashion. Thus, the overarching question guiding the investigation in this study is to what extent we may identify a nexus between the elite efforts to guide the process of turning societal divisions into manifest cleavages and the structuring of electoral behaviour along these very same cleavages. Drawing on electoral returns from the 8.000 Spanish municipalities an answer to the following question is provided: How and to what extent may electoral participation and party choice in Spain between 1977 and 2000 be understood in relation to how the parties and voters handled the challenges posed by the transition from authoritarianism and democratic consolidation.
