Añadir al carritoOctavo, green cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, ix, 118 pp. Fine in a Near-Fine dust jacket with sunned spine. From dust jacket: No office provided for in the Florida state constitution is more important or has its function less understood by the general public than that of circuit clerk. This key historical figure in state government dates back to the territorial period when provisional governor Andrew Jackson appointed his military aid Lieutenant Colonel John Miller as clerk of court for newly created Escambia County. He was the first of many to come. By the 1970s Florida's clerks and their staff performed 926 constitutional and statutory tasks, and by the late 1990s, merely listing their duties required sixteen single-spaced pages of manuscript. This book is the first time that the history of the clerks has been told. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Law Studies, Americana, U.S.-iana, Family History. TAS.…

Añadir al carritoOctavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt lettering, xiv, 245 pp. Very Good, with light foxing (age darkened spotting) and former-owner inscription; in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with lightly rubbed edges. From dust jacket: Samuel Proctor -- teacher, author, administrator, editor, preservationist, and oral history pioneer -- was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on March 29, 1919. From his enrollment as a freshman in 1937 at the University of Florida until his retirement in 1996, he had (except for service in World War II) a continuous relationship with that institution. This book's twelve essays stressing Florida's diversity, plus an overview of Professor Proctor's career, are written by Sam's students and colleagues. Edited by Mark I. Greenberg, William Warren Rogers, and Canter Brown, Jr., who are also contributors, the book honors his distinguished career. Professor Proctor has had a major impact on how scholars and the general public perceives Florida, and, by words spoken and written, has done much to preserve the state's history. For example, he edited the Florida Historical Quarterly for thirty years -- from 1963 to 1993. During that time he gave publication access to both seasoned professors and emerging scholars and, building of the work of his predecessors, brought the Quarterly to the front rank of American state journals of history. The essays begin with a discussion of "Marriage and Community Construction in St. Augustine, 1784 - m1804," and end with "The Latinization of Florida." Between those eras they explore a wide range of Florida topics: "cracker" women in the nineteenth century, black troops during the Civil War, a black Baptist minister during Reconstruction and beyond, a Jewish mayor of Tampa, black Republicans and the Knights of Labor, the Seminole Indians, a Jacksonville nun, mob violence, a Congresswoman, and World War II. "Here is a powerful selection of fiction and nonfiction mirroring the Negro experience in America. The time sequence of the book extends from the midnight of slave time to now - 11 P.M. (when 'for America this may be the last opportunity she has to deal with black Americans and negotiate. Before the terrifying prospects of internal strife, armed suppression and needless destruction descend fully upon us all.' - Whitney M. Young, Jr.). The changes in black and white consciousness over the years are clearly evident in this clockwise turn of fiction and events". Contributors include James Baldwin, Claude Brown, T.R.
