Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the meticulously researched details of furnishing plans for five key buildings at Fort Larned National Historic Site in Kansas, aiming to recreate the atmosphere of a frontier military post during the post-Civil War era. The author meticulously examines historical documents, including military regulations, supply lists, and personal accounts, to piece together an accurate representation of daily life for both officers and enlisted men. The restoration project focuses on the year 1868, a pivotal time in the history of Fort Larned, and encompasses structures such as the post hospital, commissary, quartermaster storehouse, and officers' quarters. Each building's historical significance and function are explored, offering insights into the challenges and realities of frontier life. The author's meticulous attention to detail extends to the furnishing of individual rooms, revealing the stark contrast between the spartan accommodations of enlisted men and the relative luxury enjoyed by officers. Through vivid descriptions and historical context, the book paints a compelling picture of the social hierarchy, daily routines, and material culture of a frontier military outpost. The reader gains a deeper understanding of the role Fort Larned played in westward expansion, the lives of those who served there, and the enduring legacy of the American frontier. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Intended as "a supplement to David Clary's two studies on the history of barracks furniture", which was also prepared for the Park Service, in 1982 and 1983.
