Hardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 584 pages. Published in 2017. Massive Biography on subject. The single most comprehensive book on Roland Barthes ever published in our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents Tiphaine Samoyault's "Barthes: A Biography" in a felicitous English translation by Andrew Brown. Foreword by Jonathan Culler, the preeminent critic/scholar on Barthes. A thorough-going intellectual portrait of THE one seminal European figure who courageously avoided - indeed, fled from - the prevailing, totalitarian, and often misguided, radical political thinking of the 20th century of the West. "He was something of an outsider. He experienced the great events of contemporary history from a distance. However, his life was caught up in the violent, intense sweep of the twentieth century, a century that he helped to make intelligible. Sheds new light on his intellectual positions, his political commitments, and his ideas, beliefs, and desires. Barthes' life-story gives substance and cohesion to his career, which was guided by desire, perspicacity, and an extreme sensitivity to the material from which the world is shaped as well as a powerful refusal to accept any authoritarian discourse" (Publisher's blurb). In short, Roland Barthes was an unapologetic aesthete first and foremost, a (passionate) defender and (ardent) lover of pleasure and beauty par excellence. Which the publisher - although, in all fairness, not the author - could not quite acknowledge openly because it isn't politically correct to do so. An absolute "must-have" title for Roland Barthes collectors. This title is an indispensable guide to Roland Barthes' indispensable work. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. This is the single most beautiful copy we have ever seen. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws ("Very Good"). This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. The greatest European culture critic of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ROLAND BARTHES TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1509505652. no.…
