Carton. It follows the story of Sir Walter and Lady Armadale, a married couple who have been living separately for years, and the events that unfold when Sir Walter unexpectedly seeks shelter at his wife's home due to a minor inconvenience. As Sir Walter and Lady Armadale are forced to confront their past, their present, and their future together, the author explores the nature of marriage, love, and forgiveness. Ultimately, this book is much more than a delightful comedy of manners; it is a wise and insightful exploration of human relationships that will resonate with readers of all ages and walks of life. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Charles Hallam Elton Brookfield (18571913) was a British actor, author, playwright and journalist, who was the first actor to play Sherlock Holmes on stage (1893). 'Random Reminiscences' was first published in 1902 and is an entertaining mixture of theatrical and other anecdotes of the late Victorian period. Brookfield was notorious for writing a risqué comedy, 'Dear Old Charley' (1908), which 'became a synonym for the extremest stage naughtiness'. Despite this, he became Examiner of Plays in the Lord Chamberlain's Office in his last years. Reissued in this compact edition in 1911 with a new Preface by the author.

Set against the backdrop of the author's education, social circles, and travels, the stories offer a glimpse into the lives of the upper classes in Britain and France, their customs, and their ways of thinking. The author, who was well-acquainted with many of the literary greats of his time such as Tennyson and Dickens, provides unique insights into their personal lives and personalities. We learn about the author's time at Westminster School and the privileges and traditions of the institution, as well as the author's experience attending a thanksgiving service at St. Paul's Cathedral in the presence of two Archbishops. This book offers a glimpse into the richness of life and culture during this period of history through the eyes of a discerning observer. It is a fascinating read for anyone interested in social history, the arts, or simply the everyday life of the Victorian era.
