Der renommierte chinesische Kurator Hou Hanru, Direktor… des MAXXI in Rom, erläutert die Wahl so: 'Als weltweit agierender Künstler mobilisiert Tanaka auf kluge Weise kollektive Aktionen. Er ermutigt die Mitwirkenden, sich auszutauschen, Gemeinschaftssinn und Kreativität zu entwickeln, wobei zugleich neue Regeln des Verhandelns und der Zusammenarbeit erprobt werden.' Koki Tanaka ( 1975 in Tochigi, Japan) wurde durch Installationen und Aktionen bekannt, bei denen er Alltagsgegenstände und vor Ort gefundenes Material einsetzt. Ein wichtiger Bestandteil seiner Arbeit sind partizipative Projekte, für die er Akteure oder Ausstellungsbesucher mit einbezieht. 2013 bespielte er den Japanischen Pavillon auf der 55. Biennale in Venedig.
