When the Seize took over Paris in 1589, Brisson was sufficiently diplomatic for them to also appoint him first president of the new Parlament, but before long he lost their trust and was executed in 1591. James Fowler Kellas Johnstone (1846-1928) was a specialist in bibliographies of Aberdeen and North East Scotland, and the author, with A.W. Robertson, of 'Bibliotheca Aberdonensis' (1928). J.L. Free of marginalia. Binding remains tight and intact. A nice copy. Please see photos. Barnabé Brisson (Latinised: Barnabas Brissonius; 1531 1591) was a French jurist and politician. Brisson never held academic office. Despite this, he is with Contius, Balduinus, Cujacius, Hotmannus and Donellus among the group of 16th century French jurists that brought Humanist jurisprudence to its peak. His principal work is De Verborum Quae ad Jus Civile Pertinent Significatione (1559), a two-folio dictionary of Justinian legal terminology that saw 17 reeditions (often much amended) up until 1805. De Verborum was the standard legal dictionary of the time, and for centuries remained an authoritative source for lexicographers. François Hotman (1524 1590) was a French lawyer and writer, associated with the legal humanists and with the monarchomaques, who struggled against absolute monarchy. His first name is often written 'Francis' in English. His surname is Latinized by himself as Hotomanus, by others as Hotomannus and Hottomannus. He has been called "one of the first modern revolutionaries". First edition of the first work. The second work first appeared in 1533. The first work is on Roman wedding customs and matrimonial law. Barbaro's treatise (On Wifely Duties) was written to Lorenzo de Medici on the occasion of his marriage in 1416. The last eight pages of the second work are letters from Poggio and Paul Vergerio praising Barbaro for having written so well. It is by no means a feminist work, enjoining submission, silence, and loving support for ones husband. RAREE1641DNPZ - 08/21 FORN-SHELF-0473-BB-2412-HKREV352.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. (12), 378 pp. First few leaves dampstained. Second and most complete early edition of this masterly description of the state of the Persian Empire. Extensively indexed & with the principal sources given, Brissonius' treatise remained for centuries the standard work on Achaemenid Persia. The book was first published by Prevosteau in Paris in 1590 from the author's notes ("ex adversariis"). Essentially the sources drawn on are purely those of ancient writers, both Greek and Latin, from whom there is extensive quotation. Book I is concerned with the Persian rulers and their history, book II with religious and social life, and book III with military organisation and prowess, both ancient and modern. Brisson (1531-91) was a distinguished jurist and author of important works, notably the legal code of Henri III, but no traveller. He was hanged by the "Ligueurs" on 15 Nov. 1591. The "Typographus lectori" makes it very clear how difficult were the circumstances in which Brisson found himself, the very walls of the city being shaken by bombardment, and the shadow of death being seen everywhere, and the very opening paragraph of the text, in which Brisson speaks of "Regii nominis decus, imperii maiestatem, totumque regni statum", has contemporary resonance. Friedrich Sylburg, who acted as editor and proof-reader for the Commelin atelier, has added just a few notes at the end, the preface to these claiming that the original Paris edition of 1590 had been full of errors of transcription and editing. From the Private Library of Rijk Smitskamp, founder and owner of the Leiden-based antiquarian bookshop 'Smitskamp Oriental Antiquarium' (formerly Brill's antiquarian bookshop), his catalogues and books are used as important reference works for Oriental books printed in the 16th and 17th century . Göllner 1878) providing a German Protestant apology against Islam based on works of the Oriental church. Contains extracts from the Panoplia of Zigabenus, a treatise against the "false prophet" Muhammad, the catechism for Saracene converts to Christianity, as well as extracts from Eutychius, Theophanes and Anastasius, printed in Greek and Latin parallel text.
