Letter. Condición: Good. Letters. Paper measures approx. 8" x 5". Correspondence is one way from Boyden to Washington with some added brief notes written in old ink on the paper. Rev. Boyden does not name his daughter in the letters and the accompany CDV photograph of a young lady has no marks or names. Paper is folded and in good condition. First letter is two pages and dated September 15, 1860 and reads: "Hopedale Rectory Cobham P. O. Sep 15.[1860] John A. Washington Esq. Dear Sir. I see in the last Southern Churchman your advertisement for a teacher in your family. I have a daughter very much devoted to teaching She might perhaps fill the place. I had written to your neighbor Robert Beverly who had supplied himself with a teacher when my letter was received. He writes me that he will show that letter to you by which you will judge of my daughter's qualifications. There is no occasion for references on your part. I had the pleasure I believe of meeting you several times, many years ago at Mr. Charles Meriwetheirs?, & you are otherwise sufficiently known to me. I am very Respectfully E. Boyden." Second letter is one page and transcribed here: "Cobham, Sept 23rd 1860 John A. Washington Esq. Dear Sir When I wrote Mr. Beverly I had not consulted with my daughter who I find is willing to engage herself to teach at less salary than I stated - for three hundred dollars. She had resolved until lately to rest at home for a year. I am very respectfully Yours &c E. Boyden." The third letter transcribed here: "Hopedale, Oct 15th John A. Washington Esq. Dear Sir Your letter of the 12th inst came to hand today. Not satisfied with two or three situations which have been offered to her, my daughter accepts your proposition, and I will myself, accompany her to your Station on Monday the 22nd. I desire to make a suggestion which of course you will feel no hesitancy in not adopting - My daughter has at present under her charge, a sister about fifteen years of age, a very quiet gentle and pious child, whom we should be glad to continue under her influence and instruction for the year to come. Would it suit you to receive her as a pupil into your family, to occupy the same room and bed with her sister? I venture to suggest this, under the impression that it would add very little to Mrs Washington's care to have one more at her table: and further, that you may perhaps judge, as I do myself from some experience, that the presence of a stranger - pupil in the family school is of some advantage. If you should regard this suggestion favorably, please inform me as soon as may be on what terms you will receive her - if not favorably, do not feel obliged to reply to it - you will expect us at your Station on Monday the 22nd I am dear Sir Most Respectfully Yours E. Boyden. If quite convenient to you my daughter would be glad to receive a part of her [last line at bottom cut off and next page is missing] John Augustine Washington's signed check was written to "Christ Church, Alexandria for $15 on October 1, 1858. The check is signed by the Church Treasurer. George Washington attended Christ Church in Alexandria. Letters and check are in good condition. John Augustine III was the great grand nephew of President George Washington. John Washington was the last private owner of Mount Vernon. He was born in 1821 at his parents' Blakely plantation near Charles Town, West Virginia. After the deaths of Bushrod Washington and d his wife Julia in 1829 the Mount Vernon Estate passed on the Bushrod's nephew John Augustine Washington II. As the oldest living heir John Augustine Washington III took possession in 1855. Due to poor Agricultural returns, dilapidation of the Estate, and the constant interruption of sightseers encouraged Washington to sell Mount Vernon to the Mount Vernon Ladies Association in 1858 for $200,000. The Washington family left Mount Vernon in February 1860 and moved to Waveland Plantation. John Augustine and his family vacated Mount Vernon for their new home Waveland pl.
