[Clough was a shoe manufacturer on Broad Street in Lynn Massachusetts and member of the Lynn Historical Society. This was one of the two bookplates commissioned from French, the other was Brainerd 51 the year before]. A play in three acts, set in the Norwegian mountains, with The [principal] Persons: Balder, Thor, Loke, Hother, Nanna, The Three Valkyrier. Ewald is a celebrated Danish lyric poet and playwright, and the first to use Norse Mythology in his writing.

As indicated in the London Quarterly Review article of January 1861 and in the preface, Borrow believed parts of the work were more than 'inspired by' Francisco Quevedo's 'Visions or Discourses' [Los Sueos or Sueos y discursos ("Dreams and Discourses"), 1627]. Wynne's classic in Welch literature is an allegory of a city is divided into three "magnificent" streets: Pride, Pleasure and Lucre.with a little cross street in the distance representing true religion. Borrow actually completed the translation in 1830, but a certain Welch bookseller residing in Smithfield shrank from publishing it the night before press fearing ruin and prosecution from Sir James Scarlett [1st Baron Abinger 1769-1844].

First edition of the so-called "Gypsy Luke" the translation of the Gospel of Luke into Caló, a language spoken by the Spanish and Portuguese Romani. Embéo e Majaró Lucas is the first book ever published in any Romani language, and the first book of the Bible ever translated into a Gypsy language, printed in only 500 copies. Translated by George Borrow (18031881) the English polyglot writer and traveler, who in 1833 was hired by the British and Foreign Bible Society to produce and distribute the New Testament in vernacular languages in various countries in Europe. Through his childhood Gypsy friend Borrow spoke the Romany language and when he was sent to Spain in 1836, he started to translate the Gospel of Luke into Caló, the local Gypsy language. "The translation was finished by early December 1837, and once he had gained permission from the Bible Society to publish the book at their costs the Embéo e Majaró Lucas or Gypsy Luke, as it is commonly called, was printed in 500 copies over Christmas 1837. It was the first book ever to appear in Caló, and caused as much scandal as sensation. Gypsies, philologists, missionaries and curious grandees all sought to secure a copy; churchmen and government officers sought to forbid it as a work of witch-craft printed in robbers' jargon. Sales consequently soared, as much while the book was still tolerated, as when it was formally forbidden by law in mid 1838. By the early 1840s, it was already a collector's item []." Wise (Borrow) 17; Collie & Fraser B.8a, binding variant with Ewald's Death of Balder on the slightly larger title label; Todd 7i. *Todd notes the existence of two variant title pages of undetermined order, one dated 1889 (as in the present copy) and one undated. The 1889 date has since been shown to be false, and in 1936 Roland Baugham identified the type used as one peculiar to Richard Clay & Sons, the printing firm used by Wise. As George Borrow was an author of interest to Wise, suspicion arose that The Death of Balder might have been one of Wise's forgeries. However Collie & Fraser, in their bibliography of Borrow state that 'such caution is no longer necessary' [p. 123]; and Carter & Pollard, in Working Paper No. 3, The Mystery of 'The Death of Balder' conclude that Wise 'had nothing to do with the book' [p. 17].
