Añadir al carritoThe Ceratogogonidae found in the Upper Cretaceous amber from Canada and New Jersy, U.S.A. are described, keyed and analyzed. Eighteen species are recognized in Canadian amber, most of these as both males and females (and one with eggs) and one as a previously described species in New Jersey amber. Some biological information is available for some of these species. To interpret phylogenetic relationships of all Cretaceous fossils, a cladistic analysis of extant Ceratopogonidae is provided. Some tribes of Ceratopogoninae form a grade, indicating the the present higher classification is inadequate. Canadian amber ceratopogonids are early lineages within the family, as are Cretaceous fossils from other deposits. Comparison with Tertiary amber Ceratopogonidae (Baltic, Saxonian, and Dominican Republic) shows that much of the extant generic diversification of the family occured between the Late Cretaceous and Eocene. The family itself likely originated and initially diversified in the Jurassic. Leiden: Backhuys Publishers, 237 pp., 27 figs, hardcover gr. 8 [23 x 15.5 cm].

Añadir al carritoThis book brings together, for the first time, all known information on the 51 genera and 1095 described Neotropical species of biting midges. An overview of the group includes a discussion of bionomics, adaptations of the various life stages, habitats, their ecological roles (including disease transmission), collecting and preparation techniques, zoogeography and classification. A key to adults (including males) provides the first key to all the genera of this region. Limited keys to eggs and larvae are presented. Keys are written in both English and Spanish. A table of all previous descriptions of immatures and a catalog of all Neotropical species is included. Sofia, Moscow. Pensoft. 198 pp., richly illsutrated, keys both in English and Spanish, hardcover gr. 8 [17 x 24 cm].
