Howden écrivit dans le Lancet (1869, 2, 157) : "Very able paper. The authors gives…a summary of what has been recorded by other writers on the subject, and a very full account of their own observations and deductions, with illustrative cases." Hammond, dans son traité intitulé "On insanity in its medical relations" résuma (p. 715) les conclusions des auteurs : "Bonnet and Poincare regard general paralysis as being primarily a vaso-motor affection, with its origin in the sympathetic system." Ces données suscitèrent de longues discussions pendant plusieurs décennies. Emile Léon Poincaré (1828-1892), père du mathématicien Henri et oncle du président de la République Raymond Poincaré, fut professeur adjoint de physiologie, puis professeur d'hygiène, à la Faculté de médecine de Nancy. Henri Bonnet fut médecin en chef à l'asile de Maréville.
