Die Zusammenarbeit von Theoretikern, Architekten und Künstlern führte zu einer offenen Arbeitsweise, die die Kartographie als System der Repräsentation und der Interpretation des Territoriums zurücktreten ließ und den Blick auf andere Dinge richtete. Wie läßt sich erzählen, was zwischen den zu weiten Maschen der Kartographie abhanden kommt? In welcher Sprache müßte dies geschehen? Welche Standpunkte werden dabei sichtbar? Das Buch "next to the city" folgt auf eine Ausstellung über die Stadt von heute, die im Sommer 1997 in der Akademie stattfand. Stuttgart wurde dabei eher zufällig Untersuchungsobjekt; es steht als Paradigma der modernen europäischen Stadt für eine mögliche urbane Situation heute. Wie in der Ausstellung erste Antworten am ehesten im Zwischenraum zwischen den Objekten, in der Entfernung oder der Nähe der Positionen zu finden waren, so versucht das Buch, in dem sich mehrere Diskursformen kreuzen, ebenfalls subjektiv von einer Wirklichkeit des Urbanen zu erzählen, der in der Fachperspektive kaum Beachtung geschenkt wird.
