Paperback. Condición: Very Good. How should men and women embark on a new relationship? Is it acceptable to flirt? Should one ever kiss in a canoe? What is the ideal age gap for marriage? What gifts are appropriate for a fiancee? How should one announce an engagement? Aimed at the romantically inclined in the 1930s, this charming self-help guide is dedicated to the etiquette of choosing, wooing and winning a prospective partner. Written with both sexes in mind, this little book is brimming with nuggets of useful advice, by turns humorous, old-fashioned and timeless: Dont attempt kissing in a canoe unless you are both able to swim. Dont delay falling in love until you have reached middle age. To be easily won is to be lightly valued. It is very inadvisable to marry anyone who laughs at your parents. Dont hesitate to break off an engagement if you consider you have made a mistake. Do bear in mind when theres any mistletoe about that two heads are better than one. Delightfully illustrated with contemporary line drawings, 'How to be a Good Lover' appears in the same series as 'How to be a Good Husband' and 'How to be a Good Wife'. All three guides were written for the middle classes of the 1930s who were reading one of the first modern self-help series on relationships. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. No freeman is to be taken or imprisoned, or dispossessed except through the lawful judgment of his peers or through the law of the land. To no one shall we sell, to no one shall we deny or delay right or justice. Magna Carta (or Great Charter of English Liberties) is one of the most important documents in legal history. Originating as a peace treaty agreed between King John and a group of powerful barons at Runnymede near Windsor on 15 June 1215, it enshrined in law the concept of individual liberty and defined the role of the monarch towards the people. The charter was successively revised and reissued throughout the thirteenth century by Englands monarchs, and the ideas expressed in it had a profound influence, as seen in the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights. The Latin text of one version of this landmark document (the 1217 issue of Henry III) is transcribed here in full, together with a modern translation and an introduction which traces the background to the making of the charter and its subsequent revisions through the centuries. It also explains how this text has become an enduring symbol of freedom in Britain and throughout the world. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Hardback. Condición: New. In 1942 the United States War Department distributed a handbook to American Servicemen advising them on the peculiarities of the 'British, their country, and their ways'. The guide was intended to lessen the culture shock for those embarking on their first trip to Great Britain, and for the most part, abroad. The instructions are a wonderful interpretation of the differences between the two allies. By turns hilarious and poignant, many observations remain quaintly relevant today.Every page is full of enchantingly nostalgic advice and observations. Reproduced in a style reminiscent of the era, this is a wonderfully evocative war-time memento. The reader, from whatever country, will revel in the amusing and terrifically truthful American perception of the British character and country.…

Paperback. Condición: New. 'Here I am once more in this Scene of Dissipation and vice, and I begin to find already my Morals corrupted.' Much loved for the romantic plot lines of her novels and witty observations on relationships, Jane Austen was also a prolific letter writer and penned many acerbic, ironic and poignant commentaries on a range of subjects. To her sister Cassandra she wrote with candid humour about the effects of the Peninsular War, on her dislike of parties and social obligations, and about her impressions of London. Her characters speak often, sometimes with bitter sarcasm, of women's inequality, ageing and the disappointments of marriage. Drawing together fifty quotations from Jane Austen's letters and novels with vibrant illustrations which illuminate everyday aspects of life in the Georgian era, this beautifully produced volume is the perfect gift for Janeites everywhere.…

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. I have decided to prepare a landing operation against England, and if necessary to carry it. Adolf Hitler, 16 July 1940.Immediately after the fall of France in June 1940, Hitler ordered his generals to organize the invasion of Britain under a plan codenamed Operation Sealion. The objective was to land 160,000 German soldiers along a forty-mile coastal stretch of south-east England.Prior to the invasion, a complex set of documents had been drawn up, consisting of maps, aerial photographs, a physical description of the British Isles region by region, statistics about roads, lists of strategic targets, and a short phrase book for the invading forces when it became necessary to fraternize with the local populace. This book brings together a selection of these documents and reproduces them in a handy-sized format. It includes aerial photographs of strategic sites, maps of the main urban centres (with identified targets), a detailed listing of British roads, advice for officers about how to mount an attack on each county, a brief description of the social composition of Britain, and a dictionary and phrase book. It also includes an introduction setting the material in its historical and military context. These invasion plans survive in very few numbers. This is the first time that a selection has been brought together, giving a remarkable insight into how the German army planned to invade Britain In June 1940, Hitler ordered his generals to organize the invasion of Britain under a plan codenamed Operation Sealion, drawing up a complex set of documents, consisting of maps, aerial photographs, a physical description of the British Isles.
