Seconde édition française, aussi rare que la première de 1664 (l'originale anglaise avait été publiée de façon posthume en 1652, avec l'assentiment du frère de l'auteur). Le traducteur en était Pierre Briot, qui donnera en 1670 une version française de l'Histoire de l'Etat présent de l'Empire ottoman, de Ricaut. Cette description topo-nosologique de l'Irlande est très précise ; et les livres sur l'île n'abondent pas au XVIIe siècle. Gerard Boat ou De Boot ou Bootius (1604-1650), frère d'Arnold Bootius, plus connu comme praticien, était un médecin d'origine hollandaise, qui se rendit à Londres en 1630 et y devint médecin du roi Charles Ier. Les terres du Nord du pays (Ulster) furent confisquées et attribuées à des colons venus d'Écosse et d'Angleterre auxquels Gerard Boate (1604-1650) se proposa de fournir les renseignements utiles pour s'installer dans ce pays rassemblé en un guide où sont étudiées la géographie, la topographie, la géologie et autres caractéristiques naturelles de l'Irlande.
