Seine Bücher wurden internationale Bestseller. Wer in die USA reist und sich dort einige Zeit aufhält, kennt unweigerlich die Drogeriekette Walgreens. Überall im Lande gibt es Stores. Was der Reisende aber vielleicht nicht weiß, ist der Aufstieg Walgreens von der grauen Maus zum absoluten Topunternehmen. Ein treffendes Beispiel für den Stoff, aus dem Management-Guru Jim Collins sein neues Buch gestrickt hat. Was genau lässt Firmen in die Topliga aufsteigen? Und damit er nicht im Trüben fischt, hat Collins bei der Beantwortung dieser Frage ein knallhartes Benchmarking durchgezogen. Auf der einen Seite standen so genannte Take-off-Unternehmen. Ihr Kennzeichen15 Jahre lang eine eher langweilige Aktienperformance, um dann ebenso lange den Marktdurchschnitt um mindestens das Dreifache zu überbieten. Auf der anderen Seite wurden Firmen ausgewählt, die aus der gleichen Branche stammten, in etwa dieselben Möglichkeiten hatten, aber den Sprung von Gut zu Spitze eben nicht schafften. Als nächstes fanden sie heraus, dass Take-off-Manager, bevor sie eine neue Vision und Strategie verkünden, zunächst die falschen Leute rauswerfen und die richtigen an Bord holen.
