"1910 begann Chavez mit der Fliegerei, am 8.9.1910 stellte er in Issy-les-Moulineaux (bei Paris) mit 2650 m einen neuen Höhenweltrekord auf. Beim Flugwettbewerb Brig-Mailand flog er am 23.9.1910 von Ried-Brig aus mit einem 50-PS-Blériot-XI-Eindecker über den Simplon und bezwang damit als erster Motorflieger die Alpen. Nach 42-minütigem Flug stürzte er südlich von Domodossola bei einem Landemanöver aus nur 10-20 m Höhe ab und erlag wenig später den Verletzungen. 1920 wurde dem Flugpionier sowohl in Brig wie auch in Ried-Brig und Domodossola ein Denkmal errichtet. Der Flug ging vom schweizerischen Brig über den Simplonpass ins italienische Domodossola. Und endete tragisch: Während das versammelte… Publikum schon in Jubelstürme über den geglückten Überflug ausbrach, stürzte der 23-jährige Pilot beim Landeanflug ab. Vier Tage später verstarb er. Sein Tod löste in der ganzen Welt Betroffenheit aus.Über die Vorbereitungen dieses Fluges, den Flug selber und sein tragisches Ende veröffentlichte der Journalist Paul Willi Bierbaum, der als Berichterstatter vor Ort war, bereits im Oktober 1910 dieses Buch. Anlässlich des 130. Geburtstages von Geo Chavez am 13. Juni 2017 wurde es neu aufgelegt.
