Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Los Angelesbased artist Walead Beshty (born 1976) has long maintained an active writing career alongside his work in the visual arts. Writing on a variety of media, including essays on cinema, painting, sculpture and photography, and texts on artists such as Jay DeFeo, Sharon Lockhart, Kelley Walker, Luisa Lambri, Annette Kelm and Michael Asher, among others, Beshty has been widely published in both books and magazines. This book, the latest in JRP|Ringiers Positions series copublished with Les presses du reel, gathers together a selection of these essays, often hard to find, in partially reedited forms. Together these texts appear as a parallel production to Beshtys artistic work: they reflect on the conditions of the realization and circulation of images, undermining distinctions between media, abstraction and figuration, and proposing new aesthetic criteria for the works examined. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Los Angeles-based artist and writer Walead Beshty (born 1976) started his Industrial Portraits series in 2008. He realizes them wherever he goes, asking all the art people he works with to pose in their working environment and working clothes: studio assistants, gallery staff, curators, lab technicians, critics, fellow artists, collectors, art handlers and even the "machines," which contribute to an artwork's progress from studio to gallery and beyond. Captioned first as "framer," "Fedex courier" or "darkroom assistant" and then identified with their initials and the location and date of the shoot, together his models form a nonhierarchical, kaleidoscopic yet very detailed "facebook" of the art world, following in part the tradition of great American anthropological photographic surveys. This publication gathers together the Industrial Portraits created between 2008 and 2012. A second volume will be published to span the subsequent years. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. …

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Walead Beshty is a carefully curated guide to key bodies of work by the acclaimed conceptual artist presented in collaboration with Thomas Dane Gallery in London, Turin and Naples. One of today's leading conceptual artists, Los Angeles-based Walead Beshty (b. 1976, London) works across photography, sculpture and words. Beshty's art is expansive and best described as an ongoing conversation, to which this monograph is his next articulation. Through a deconstructing lens, Walead Beshty explores every exhibition and project the artist has presented in collaboration with Thomas Dane Gallery in London, Turin and Naples. The monograph offers a guide to some of the artist's key bodies of work. Uncovering processes is central to Beshty's art. He deliberately incorporated marks made by oxidation and human touch into his FedEx copper works and Copper Surrogate works, as well as photographing the many individuals involved in his exhibitions in Industrial Portraits. The work that has gone into this substantial new monograph, which features contributions from publisher Francis Atterbury, book designer Billie Temple and Thomas Dane partner Francois Chantala, is, quite literally, laid bare. Also presented is an insightful essay by leading professor of Juridical Sociology at University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, Carlo De Rita. Adopting a semiotic approach to books as 'not just a thing you hold, but something held in common', Walead Beshty embraces the archetypal format, tropes and conventions of a traditional - if unorthodox - book, employing printing and publishing practices seldom seen in contemporary bookmaking. It reflects on what an artist's monograph might represent as it explores the contingencies that allow art to function. Walead Beshty is itself another carefully curated exhibition of his work.
