Owen was from a horse racing family who worked the fair circuit. She was educated at SF State and was co-director of the St. Marks Poetry Project in NYC. She began publishing Telephone from St. Marks in 1969 as part of the Mimeo Revolution of which Anne Waldman, Judson Crews and Alice Notely of "Chicago" were major figures.…

As issued, mimeographed pages with text on the rectos only, side-stapled in stiff wrappers with printed cover illustration and scattered hand-coloring by Kraut. Wrappers are a trifled toned; a discolored area on the rear wrapper; light shelfwear; internally clean. One of nine mimeographed books issued by Bob Rosenthal and Rochelle Kraut at their late 1970s Frontward Press. Despite the fairly large limitation, copies are relatively uncommon. Condición: Very good. First printing. Inscribed first edition of this early collection by the New York School poet, to a friend and fellow poet on the West Coast. Ted Berrigan's connections with the poets and artists on both coasts seeded and saturated his poetry and peregrinations, from Chicago to New York to Bolinas. Here, in a copy formerly owned by a "star student" of his, Berrigan pays tribute to Keith Abbott, friend, collaborator (they would both go on to teach at the Jack Kerouac School for Disembodied Poetics), and per Ted, the collection's "only deserving male reader." 8'' x 5.5''. Original black pictorial wrappers designed by Joe Brainard. Cover price $1.75. 48 pages. Previous owner inscription, "Daniel Gray / Feb. 69," in pencil to first blank, below inscribed by Berrigan in black pen: "former star / student of / mine / at U. of Iowa / sold this / book to someone, / out of starvation + / despair, and / it was happily then / bought by it's [sic] / only / Truly deserving / male reader, / Keith Abbot [sic], / who is adored by, / Ted Berrigan." Paperback. Condición: VG-. Weathered & worn, this copy of The Sonnets survived a cross-continent journey as well as decades of the dry heat of Bisbee, Arizona. Number 203 of 300 numbered copies (there was also a run of unnumbered ones), the present book shows chipping & softening at extremities with the back cover quite chipped & worn & separated from one of its three staples. In addition there's indication of former dampness to final dozen pages & foxing to somewhat fewer. Aside from the usual age-toning within there are no further mentionable defects. The editor was Ron Padgett published by Lorenz and Ellen Gude at C Press. Berrigan has dedicated his masterpiece to Joe Brainard, as often the case, the back cover is missing usually because the text stock was too thick for the staples to adhere. Our copy came between two sheets of cardboard protected and wrapped in mylar. One of the seminal books of poetry published from the sixties.…
