Bernardo Bellotto (1721-1780) war Neffe und Schüler des venezianischen Vedutenmalers Giovanni Antonio Canal, von dem er auch den Beinamen Canaletto übernahm. Berühmt wurde er durch seine topografischen Dokumentationen der Städte Venedig, Dresden, Wien, München und Warschau. Die Ansichten Dresdens schuf er als Hofmaler des sächsischen Kurfürsten Friedrich August II. um die Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Dieser Band zeigt die Stadtansichten, die sich im Besitz der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden befinden, in zahlreichen Gesamt- und ganzseitigen Detailaufnahmen in durchweg farbiger Reproduktion. Darüber hinaus enthält er alle 16 Radierungen, die Bellotto nach seinen Gemälden geschaffen hat. Die Einführung und Bilderläuterungen verfasste Fritz Löffler, der wohl beste Kenner des alten Dresden.
