Cette édition a paru en 57 livraisons entre avril et décembre 1883 (selon la Bibliographie de la France). Pot-Bouille est le dixième volume de la série des Rougon-Macquart. Il paraît d'abord sous forme de feuilleton dans Le Gaulois entre le 23 janvier 18823 et le 14 avril 1882. L'action se déroule pendant les années 1862-1863. Ce roman dépeint la vie bourgeoise à travers un microcosme parisien : un immeuble cossu de la rue de Choiseul. Zola y critique avec virulence l'hypocrisie, l'égoïsme et la corruption morale des classes moyennes et supérieures. L'histoire se déroule principalement dans cet immeuble, où chaque étage est occupé par une famille ou un individu représentant un type social. Derrière des façades respectables se cachent des drames, des intrigues et des travers bien moins reluisants : adultères, avarice, hypocrisie religieuse, ambition démesurée et exploitation des domestiques. Octave Mouret, jeune homme ambitieux venu de province, est le fil conducteur du récit. Il loue une chambre dans l'immeuble et cherche à s'élever socialement. Séducteur opportuniste, il s'immisce dans la vie de ses voisins, naviguant habilement entre les couples et les ambitions. Son parcours amorce la transition vers le personnage qu'il deviendra dans Au Bonheur des Dames (1883). Pot-Bouille est un portrait acerbe de la société bourgeoise du XIX? siècle. En exposant les travers et contradictions de cette classe, Zola poursuit son projet naturaliste d'explorer les déterminismes sociaux et biologiques. Le titre même, qui signifie "marmite où mijotent des restes", illustre l'idée d'un mélange trouble de secrets et de compromissions derrière une façade apparemment ordonnée. Cette première édition illustrée s'inscrit dans le projet que Zola avait de rendre ses ?uvres accessibles au plus grand nombre et à moindre frais. Ce volume, ainsi que huit autres, parus en livraisons à quelques centimes (6 fr. l'ensemble du volume) fait partie des "Premières illustrées" des Rougon Macquart avec aussi Thérèse Raquin qui s'y trouve également. Elles parurent entre 1878 (L'Assommoir) et 1893 (La Débâcle). La plupart du temps ces volumes ont été pauvrement reliés à l'époque et impitoyablement malmenés par des mains peu soigneuses. Les beaux exemplaires bien reliés à l'époque, tirés sur papier d'édition, sont déjà peu communs. Les beaux exemplaires très bien reliés à l'époque et sur grand papier sont rares et doivent être recherchés. Ces premières illustrées sur grand papiers sont aussi importantes à nos yeux que les éditions originales parues en libraire en volume chez G. Charpentier. Bel exemplaire très désirable de ce volume rare dans cette condition.

" He remembers reading his (already forgotten) verses in font of the artist's "immortal paintings ". Nobody, he concludes, will forget what he was: "the great poet of painting". Alfred Victor, Comte de Vigny (1797 - 1863) was a French poet and early leader of French Romanticism. He also produced novels, plays, and translations/adaptations of Shakespeare, notably 'Othello' and 'The Merchant of Venice'. 'Les Destinées', whose original title was intended to be 'Poèmes Philosophiques', was published posthumously in 1864 by his executor Louis Ratisbonne. 7 of the 11 parts were published between 1843 and 1864 by the Revue des deux mondes. The last piece in the collection, L'esprit pur/The Pure Spirit, was written 14 days before the author's death, and is interpreted as the poet's last message to the world.
