Wraps in Slipcase. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. Bound in vellum-like paper with gilt stamping to front and to spine (though spine is darkened), held together with three leather hinges, only one of which is still in place, the others having broken off. While the signatures themselves are stitched and holding there is gapi…ng between a few of them where the leather hinges are gone. Other than some staining of the endpapers from the leather hinges, internally nice. The slipcase is plain and sunned. Originally published in 1641. 1250 copies printed; this copy has a decorative blind-stamp on the colophon page "This Book is Out of Series - For Review".

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, limited to 1250 numbered copies (this an un-numbered out of series copy reserved for review, with a neat embossed stamp to that effect at the base of the colophon leaf). Slim 8vo. [iv], 51pp + v pages of notes. Printed on hand-made Van Gelder paper and bound within th…e original limp vellum parchment, gilt lettered at the spine and upper wrapper with a small gilt-stamped decoration. Very good indeed and housed in the original stiff card slipcase, which is lightly soiled and rubbed. Thirty-seven poems, originally published posthumously in 1641, "pirated in part by Henry Bold in 1657; & thereafter wholly neglected. Although the book in its entirety affords some reason for this neglect, I believe that the following selection will show in occasional Donne-Like phrases and rare whole poems reasons still better for a new and sympathetic attention" - from Meynell's foreword.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. "Select Poems Divine and Humane" is a compelling collection of verse by Thomas Beedome, a poet of the early 17th century whose work captures the spiritual and secular tensions of the Caroline era. The collection is organized into two distinct spheres: the divine, which encompasses poignant r…eligious meditations and prayers, and the humane, which features elegies, epistles, and lyrical observations on the human condition.Beedome's poetry is often associated with the metaphysical tradition, characterized by its intellectual depth, striking metaphors, and rhythmic complexity. His sacred verses reflect a profound engagement with faith and mortality, while his secular pieces reveal a sharp wit and a keen eye for social detail. As a contemporary of the great Cavalier and religious poets, Beedome offers a unique perspective on the evolution of the English lyric during a transformative period in literary history. This volume serves as an essential resource for readers of Renaissance and seventeenth-century literature, preserving the legacy of a writer whose voice resonates with both earnest devotion and worldly insight. "Select Poems Divine and Humane" stands as a testament to the enduring power of early modern English verse. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Original vellum. Condición: Good+. No Dust Jacket. First Edition; First Impression. Deckle edges, somewhat soiled. Covers & spine somewhat smudged, discoloured & worn (see pictures) but gilt stamp still shiny. ; Limited edition. Number 1238 of 1250. Deckle edges, somewhat soiled. Covers & spine somewhat smudged, discoloured & wo…rn (see pictures) but gilt stamp still shiny. ; 20.1 x 12 x 0.7 cms; v, 51 pages; Poems Divine and Humane is the posthumous 1641 collection of Thomas Beedome, an English poet who died young, likely around 1640â"41. The volume was edited by Henry Glapthorne and includes commendatory verses from various contemporaries, highlighting Beedome's literary promise. The collection is divided into two main sections: "humane" poems and "divine" poems. The "humane" section comprises a narrative poem titled The Jealous Lover, or, The Constant Maid, written in six-line stanzas, followed by songs, epistles, epigrams, elegies, and devotional poems. Notably, two epigrams are addressed to Sir Henry Wotton, another to George Wither, and others to friends such as William Harrington and Captain Thomas James. These poems reflect Beedome's engagement with his contemporaries and his literary environment. The "divine" section includes meditations on life, God, and death, drawing inspiration from poets like George Herbert. Beedome's religious poems are characterized by their introspective and contemplative nature. The collection as a whole showcases Beedome's versatility, encompassing themes of love, friendship, death, and spirituality. Despite his early death, Beedome's work was appreciated by his peers, and his poems were later included in anthologies of seventeenth-century poetry. His ability to blend personal emotion with broader themes of human experience has earned him a place among the lesser-known yet noteworthy poets of his time.

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Nonesuch Press, Bloomsbury, 1928. Small 8vo, pp. [vi], 51, [vi]. One of 1250 copies, this being 1025. All edges untrimmed, an unopened copy. Limp vellum parchment with pigskin thongs, small gilt-stamped decoration to front cover, gilt-stamped 'Beedome' to spine. Some rubbing to…parchment. Front hinge cracked and unattached, binding starting. The verse of Thomas Beedome (d. 1641) includes love poems, elegies for such figures as his friend John Donne and Gustav Adolphus of Sweden, and religious works. Somewhat in the manner of Donne, they were published in 1641 after his death, and a pirated edition came out in 1657. Thereafter they languished until Meynell took an interest in them and edited them for this printing. The Nonesuch Press was founded in 1923 by typographer and book designer Francis Meynell (1891-1975) with the help of his friend David Garnett and his future wife, Vera Mendel. Meynell designed his books on a small Albion hand press, but had them printed commercially in order to keep the price of well-designed books made of quality materials within the means of readers and collectors who could not afford most private press editions.
