Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book estimates the cost of constructing a street pavement system, including drainage, grading, and laying of curbs, gutters, and paving in Naperville, Illinois. The author compares costs of different combinations of pavements; macadam or asphalt in residential areas and brick in b…usiness areas. Asphalt was preferred for its cleanliness and ease of use but was more expensive. Macadam, while a good pavement for light traffic was chosen for its low cost. Brick, due to its better wearing qualities under heavy traffic, was opted for in business areas. The author specifies Portland cement filler to ensure equal hardness and strength of the filler and brick, reducing chipping of the brick's edges. For steep grades, asphalt or macadam would wash out, so brick was specified instead. A parabolic surface was chosen for its drainage capabilities, while intersections were kept flat for better appearance. The drainage system's capacity was adequate for the region's rainfall. Inlets were placed to keep water from flowing over crosswalks. Elevations of properties, curbs, and street lines were taken to calculate excavation for grading. This book is a valuable resource for understanding the cost and construction of street pavement systems, providing insights into the factors that influence pavement selection and design. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
