A scarce early Estienne university textbook on Aristotelian ethics from the circle of Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples, containing Beatus Rhenanus' earliest recorded original printed contribution. This revised and enlarged editio…n of Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples' (c. 1455-1536) Artificialis introductio presents the leading French humanist's concise introduction to Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, prepared for university instruction. First published in 1502, the work occupies an important place in the history of printing, as that edition was the earliest surviving book to bear the name of Henri Estienne I in its imprint, inaugurating the long collaboration between Lefèvre and the Estienne press. Between 1502 and 1511, more than half of Henri Estienne's editions were devoted to Lefèvre's educational programme. The present edition includes the commentary of Josse Clichtove (1472-1543), Lefèvre's pupil and principal collaborator. The edition contains what appears to be Beatus Rhenanus' (1485-1547) earliest recorded original printed contribution: his signed address to the reader, Beatus Rhenanus lectori bene agere, introducing the work in two elegiac distichs. According to the bibliographies of Horawitz and Knod, Rhenanus' only earlier recorded appearance in print was as one of the scholars participating in the recognitio of Lefèvre's Contenta (1505). Produced during the formative years of the collaboration between Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples and the Estienne press, the volume exemplifies the new generation of Parisian university textbooks that combined concise exposition with learned commentary for the teaching of Aristotelian philosophy. The present copy preserves contemporary scholarly annotations, documenting its early academic use. The edition is also scarce on the market: RBH records only a single copy offered at auction during the past century, appearing in a sammelband of four early Aristotelian works by Lefèvre (Sotheby's, 1995). . A few small stains and occasional light soiling, some browning minor marginal wear. Contemporary scholarly marginalia and annotations, underlines concentrated on the opening leaves, with occasional notes elsewhere in the text. Final leaf with early pen trials, calligraphic flourishes, ownership inscriptions, and a short contemporary vernacular note. Overall in fine condition.

Nausea was a leading figure in the irenic movement at the imperial court, seeking reconciliation and reform within the Church rather than division.Na…usea vents both his grief and his admiration, attributing a divine mission and even Christ-like qualities to Erasmus. This eulogy reflects the profound esteem in which Erasmus was held by his circle of humanist contemporaries. Though Nausea insists that no man should be called beatus (blessed) in his lifetime, he suggests that after Erasmus' passing, the Pope and the cardinals alike ought to have proclaimed him a saint, a model of poverty, chastity, and temperance.Appended to the obituary is the celebrated biography of Erasmus by Beatus Rhenanus (1485-1547), written in the form of a letter (Epistola ad Archiepiscopum Coloniensem). Rhenanus was a German humanist scholar and one of Erasmus' most trusted friends. He had lived and worked with Erasmus in Basel and was responsible for editing several of his works, including the Epistolae. This letter remains one of the most intimate and authoritative contemporary accounts of Erasmus life.With some underlining in the text, and an old annotation, by a reader reflecting on themes of birth, virtue, and ancestry, on the verso of the otherwise blank leaf C7, the bottom half of the leaf is lacking. The binding shows slight signs of wear along the extremities, slightly browned throughout. Covered in contemporary limp wrappers crafted from top portion of medieval vellum folio of rubricated double-column semi-quadratic Gothic script (3-1/2 columns with top 18 lines over 15.5 cm,… width of leaf 24.7 cm from gutter sewing stabs to one edge, columns 8 cm), portion of one leaf folded over as a fore-edge flap, interior of flap faced with top recto portion of one column of an early double-column printed and rubricated paper leaf (columns 8 cm, 37 partial lines over 17 cm). Spine with two raised bands, pasted paper number label at top. Blank pastedown rear; front pastedown entirely covered by pasted paper Troilo armorial bookplate. Three separate early inscriptions, on front free endleaf recto, Regius title and rear free endleaf verso. Four pages with neat minuscule marginalia and underlining in old brown ink at beginning of Pomponius. Old mold spotting commencing in quire H of Pomponius and continuing to end; 5 mm wormhole in rear cover, 20 mm wormhole in rear binder s blank, diminishing and disappearing in quire M of Pomponius; minor toning and spotting of pages passim; covers soiled, rubbed and edge-worn; edge splitting at bottom of front cover and at top and bottom of spine. Else in very good condition for its age and evident shelf use. The first two inscriptions, evidently a 1566 gift inscription and 1567 memorial inscription, have an emphatic Hungarian nexus. The bifolium cover is not mere waste but a carefully fitted binding, a perception reinforced by the two-column printed and rubricated paper leaf neatly pasted on the reverse of the vellum, bare on the fore-end flap, else covered carefully with a blank pastedown. In the first column of the leaf covering the front an invocation of Mary Magdalene is followed by an introit to Saint Apollinaris, fixing the text in the Proper of the Saints for July 22 and 23. Purely speculatively, the parent breviary may descend from a chapter of an Apollinaire church dependent on Vladislaus II of Hungary circa 1500.

Woodcuts by Konrad Schnitt (CS) (1495-1541) except for the cuts on *3v, *4r and a4r which are probably by Hans Rudolf Deutsch (1525-1571). 106 illustrations including…85 full page and 16 half page in the text, and 52 initials in wood or metal cut, as well as Froben's woodcut printer's stamp on the title and the final leaf verso. The first complete and first illustrated edition. In later blindstamped calf, spine redone with older spine cover laid down. Interior strong but crude hinge reinforcements, later end papers, some humidity marks, especially at the beginning, very occasional small mark or foxing, title page has been reinforced including a tear across the top margin which was repaired, otherwise clean and sturdy. Two old bookseller descriptions pasted on the inside front cover, bookplates of Sir John Hynde Cotton (4th baronet, 1717-1795) of Madingley Hall (at title verso) and one for James Elwin Millard (1823-1894) , Chorister of Magdelen College to front pastedown, another ownership signature on first free end paper. This beautifully illustrated book is the first complete printed edition of an important ancient Roman manuscript, the Notitia Dignitatum, which was one of the few surviving manuscripts on Roman civil and military government, covering offices from the level of the imperial court all the way down to the provincial level. It is a unique and surprisingly accurate source on both the Western and Eastern Roman empires, indispensable for understanding civil and military organization in the early 400s. [see Bowersock Late Antiquity]. Interestingly, the Notitia seems to have survived in only one manuscript copy, written in a Caroline minuscule script, probably from around the 900s, which was subsequently lost. It was first published in a small abridgement without illustrations in 1529-30. This large Froben 1552 edition is the first complete edition. It is lavishly produced, containing numerous illustrations of insignia and uniforms, illustrations of ancient scrolls and codices, buildings with architectural details, schematic maps, allegorical portraits of provinces, geographic information, a wealth of visual information including such esoterica as shield patterns of Roman military units. The prefatory "Illyrici." which includes a city view of 16th century Istanbul and Rome was written by Beatus Rhenanus. The anonymous "De rebus bellicis" has illustrations of military machinery and weapons and includes perhaps the first idea of propelling a ship without oars or sails and the invention of the paddle-wheel, which inspired Leonardo da Vinci. There is also an illustration of a conversation between Emperor Hadrian and the philosopher Epictetus.
