However, soon after the start of the nineteenth century, its reputation began to suffer. Rival translators, literary hucksters, and careless scholars initiated or fed a variety of charges against Smollett-even plagiarism. For almost 130 years no publisher risked reprinting it.Redemption began in 1986, when the distinguished Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes, in his foreword to a new (albeit flawed) edition of Smollett's translation, declared it to be "the authentic vernacular version" of Don Quixote in English. Contains 51 sections on individual novelists of the period, each written by an expert, typically providing brief biographical facts, a list of first editions, a bio-critical essay providing a chronological discussion of the author's novels and discussing the initial and subsequent critical response, and a listing of other biographical and critical studies of the author. Illustrated with author portraits, facsimile title and text pages, manuscript pages, scenes from the authors' lives etc. From the introduction - "As a reference work, these volumes are unique in that they bring together for the first time authoritative critical biographies of no fewer than fifty-one authors, pioneers all, who - some, to be sure, managing the business more successfully than others - created the forms and established the thematic concerns of the classic British novel.
