This handsomely produced Batsford anthology brings together poems of the Romantic period with the paintings and drawings that so often shared the same subjects and sensibility. The double aim, set out in the introduction, is both to give pleasure through the juxtaposition of memorable (and sometimes unfamiliar) verse and pictures, and to show how closely the poets and painters of the age responded to the same themes: night and nightmare, storm-lashed coasts, ruined abbeys, moonlight, the Lakes, the Alps, and the Italian landscape. Wordsworth's Tintern Abbey appears alongside views by Turner, Girtin and Crome; Shelley's The Cloud is paired with Constable; Byron and de Loutherbourg share stormy coastal scenes; Erasmus Darwin and Henry Fuseli are both preoccupied by the night-mare; and the Lakes, Alps and Italy recur throughout. He specialised in carefully chosen thematic collections that paired verse with fine reproductions of related art, producing attractive, accessible books that remain popular with collectors of both poetry and illustrated volumes. These poems, plays, and prose fictions reveal how Renaissance writers embraced uncertain potential to think about their own present moment and their own place in time. The history of the future that Barret reconstructs looks beyond futures implicitly dismissed as impossible or aftertimes defined by inevitability and fixed perspective. Chapters on Philip Sidney's Old Arcadia, Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene, William Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, Antony and Cleopatra, and Cymbeline, and John Milton's Paradise Lost trace instead a persistent interest in an indeterminate, earthly future evident in literary constructions that foreground anticipation and expectation. Barret argues that the temporal perspectives embedded in these literary texts unsettle some of our most familiar points of reference for the period by highlighting an emerging cultural self-consciousness capable of registering earthly futures predicated on the continued sameness of time rather than radical ruptures in it.
