Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear and rubbing to top and bottom of jacket and spine, folds and corners rubbed, some overall rubbing as for some reason is usual with this book, not price clipped (25s), initial 'M' in red biro to ffep (could this have been Harold Macmillan's own copy?), internally clean tight and almost square, overall a vg copy for its age. 408pp. The ninth novel in C. P. Snow's 'Strangers and Brothers' sequence. Lewis Eliot walks the echoing corridors of Whitehall observing political intrigues and shifting alliances in this exceptional portrait of the heart of the British government during the Suez Crisis. At its centre is Roger Quaife, an ambitious MP determined to denuclearize Britain. His weapons are persuasiveness and a consummate skill in top level diplomacy. In the committee rooms of Whitehall he plays with the highest stakes imaginable as he challenges the Government's armaments policy. What ensues is a fascinating study of power, personal and political, handled with Snow's inimitable authenticity and intimacy. Deservedly famed as one of the most accomplished political novels of all time 'Corridors of Power' goes behind the scenes of the Cold War with precision and humanity. A meticulous study of the public issues and private problems of post war Britain by physicist, novelist and civil servant C. P. Snow (1905-80). Jacket by Sidney Nolan (ilustrador). …

Añadir al carritoOriginal boards. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Octavo (191 x 122mm), pp. viii, 408. Original red boards, spine lettered in gilt, dustwrapper with design after Sidney Nolan, not price-clipped. (Edges slightly bumped, dustwrapper lightly rubbed, slight creasing and short tears at edges.) A very good, clean copy. First edition. The writer, scientist, and politician C.P. Snow (1905-1980) worked as a scientist and scientific administrator while beginning his 'Strangers and Brothers' sequence of novels, which commenced with Strangers and Brothers (later re-titled George Passavant) in 1940. Drawing upon his experiences during the 1930s, World War II, and the postwar era, the eleven novels of the series concluded in 1970 with Last Things. Corridors of Power forms the ninth novel in the cycle, and its title entered the language (as had that of Snow's celebrated essay 'The Two Cultures'). In Corridors of Power 'public and private concerns interact [. . .] on the ministerial level during the mid-1950s, including the question of Suez, but the public issue, Snow confides in a prefatory note, turns on an "unresolvable complication". [The cycle's protagonist Lewis] Eliot, largely here an observer, listens to the ambitious Roger Quaife, whose philosophy is "The first thing is to get power. The next -- is to do something with it"' (ODNB). This was the last of three of the novels in the sequence with a dustwrapper designed by the Australian artist Sidney Nolan, following The Conscience of the Rich (1958) and The Affair (1960).…
