PREFACE Primarily Municipal Government of the City of New York was written for the purpose of enabling the pupils of the schools to know their own city. The introductory chapters give in story form the purchase of Manhattan Island and its growth under the Dutch and English governments. They also give the history of the city immediately following the Revolution. The chapters take up each administrative department of the city government from its very beginning and tell, in detail, of its development and the manner in which it is managed at the present time. In order to bring the book up to date each department of the municipal government was most carefully studied under the immediate and helpful supervision of the Commissioner or some one delegated by him. After each chapter was written it was read critically by an official of the department treated.…
