Zwei Verfassungs-Entwürfe waren hintereinander vom Volke verworfen worden; die Verfassungswirren hatten ihren Höhepunkt erreicht; man war der Revision müde und wünschte sehnlichst wieder geordnete Zustände. Trotzdem war es durchaus nicht sicher, dass der neue Entwurf die Sanktion des Volkes erhalten werde. [.] In dieser Zeit nun, da der Kampf am heissesten geworden, im Februar 1852 erschienen in der bei Jos. Zehnder, Buchdrucker in Baden, viermal wöchentlich herausgegebenen ?Neuen Eidgenössischen Zeitung? ?die Briefe des Gätterlimacher über die neue Verfassung? Der Verfasser derselben ist der damalige Seminardirektor Augustin Keller in Wettingen, der wie kein Anderer berufen war, ein Lehrer des Volkes auch in politischen Dingen zu sein.? (p. 5). -- Augustin Keller (Sarmenstorf 1805?1883 Lenzburg), Direktor des Aargauischen Lehrerseminars und Regierungsrat (Erziehungsdepartement), National- und Ständerat. Keller war den Ideen der Aufklärung verpflichtet, aber ein Gegner der direkten Demokratie und ein vehementer Kämpfer gegen kirchliche Einflüsse auf die Politik. Die Aufhebung der aargauischen Klöster ging auf seinen Antrag von 1841 im Grossen Rat zurück. ?Als Kirchenpolitiker bleibt er umstritten, als Förderer des aargauischen Schulwesens sind seine Verdienste allgemein anerkannt.?
