Alles en alles bracht de veiling ongeveer een tiende op van het geld door den armen Doetsch voor deze rommelzôo betaald. In London Henry Doetsch lived as a respected financier at 7 New Burlington Street. A generous host and notorious bachelor, Doetsch opened his home and Art Gallery to an interested audience. Still in Spain Henry Doetsch started to collect pictures by old masters. Staying in contact with Bernard Berenson, masterpieces by great painters were gathered in the collection: Titian, Veronese, Guido Reni, Dolci, Lorenzo Lotto, Palma Vecchio, Pontormo, Bronzino, Andrea del Sarto, van Dyck, Rubens, Breughel, Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Wouwerman, Clouet and Holbein. Some of the paintings came from important galleries: Orléans-Galliera, Palazzo Vendramin (Henri Duc de Bordeaux), The Collection King Charles I, Pinacotece Lochis, or from private collections as those of the Duke of Roxburghe, the Marquis of Donegall or Conte Alborghetti. Doetsch's evenings at New Burlington Street were famous: Among his guests the Prince of Wales (Edward VII), Lord Rosebery and his friend Colonel Burnaby. Doetsch was a lover of black Havana cigars; he died of pneumonia on 25 May 1894 in London. …

The first of two large miscellaneous auction catalogues with descriptions of 4335 lots sold over 12 days from 25th April to 8th May 1861; 250 items related to Galileo, described as lots 2985-3235, were sold on the 9th day. (A second auction ended 26th July 1861). Count Guglielmo Libri-Camucci, outstanding Florentine mathematician, is best known as a convicted cleptomaniac, who stole books and manuscripts from libraries in Italy and France while researching as a scholar owing to social introductions. His first thefts were scientific manuscripts and books of hours from the library of Lorenzo de Medici in Florence. Seeking greater opportunities he emigrated to France and befriended the politician François Guizot. By 1841, he was made chief inspector of French libraries with unsupervised access to collections all over France. Although massive thefts were discovered in 1847 with Libri as the prime suspect, he was shielded by Prosper Merimé and other friends, whom he lost during the 1848 Revolution. Fearing arrest for theft, he fled to London disguised as a political refugee, having beforehand sent some 30,000 books and manuscripts to be auctioned. After his conviction in absentia in France, Libri defended his reputation in London in a public letter written on his behalf by Achille Jubinal to the Athenaeum in 1851. With the help of Antonio Panizzi, director of the British Library, he was able to retain the trust of his English contacts, presenting himself as a bibliophile slandered by malicious political enemies who was forced to sell his collections because of his poor health, as explained in his lengthy (bilingual) introduction contained in the preliminaries. The extent of his thefts and deceptions was conclusively exposed after his death in 1869, when his collections were already sold. ' the first auction sale of rare books to describe in detail so many great classics in the mathematical and physical sciences.' (Norman). Añadir al carrito7 fictitious auction catalogues in 1 volume. Collection of 7 fictitious auction catalogues, satirically describing the lots supposedly offered for sale. These catalogues, all in Dutch, were published mostly during the Anglo-Dutch War (1780-1784), which threatened the Dutch Republic's existence, and they all mock the British Empire. Most of them purport to describe the collection of "G.R." (Georgius Rex), meaning King George III (ad 1 explicitly describes the goods as coming from the foreclosure on his estate). The third catalogue in this collection, titled Catalogus van eene zo ongemeene zeldzaame, als uitmuntende verzameling van manuschripten, supposedly offers the collection of the English nobleman Lord William Gordon (1744-1823). These fictitious auction catalogues proved popular enough that several went through multiple editions. These catalogues appeared during the heated strife between two political parties, the Orangists, who supported the stadtholder Willem V, Prince of Orange, and the anti-Orangist Patriots, leading to the failed Patriotic Revolution of 1787, inspired by the American Revolution and in turn, in spite of its failure, inspiring the French Revolution. King George III of England supported the stadtholder Willem V and the two together were the enemies of the Dutch Patriots. Ad 1 is here in its third edition, being a very rare re-issue of the second edition. Even its list of "errata" is a joke, noting three corrections to the descriptions of paintings: in each, the omission of a comma makes a phrase that should refer to the painting refer instead to the subject, indicating that the king was anointed with soot, a lord stabbed with a pen, and an English admiral nicely washed by a French master. With a few marginal annotations, particularly headwords to help the reader find items in specific categories in the inventory. Spine very slightly rubbed, with a small crack at the head, some browning, stains, frayed margins and a tear in A4 of ad 2. Some leaves are trimmed. Overall in good condition. A collection of fictitious auction catalogues, rarely found on the market (we have noticed only 3 examples in the past hundred years).l Ad 1: STCN 202814955 (4 copies); not in Knuttel; cf. Knuttel 19700 & 19701 (first and second impression). Ad 2: Knuttel 19709; STCN 166695440. Ad 3: Knuttel 19699; STCN 166705268 (5 copies); not in ESTC. Ad 4: Knuttel 19704; STCN 166698857.
