Independently wealthy during his early career, his creative mission centred on exploring the darker, cynical corners of human psychology, adopting the stance of a wealthy lone wolf detached from both American commercialism and mainstream Victorian morality. This socio-economic freedom allowed him to finance his own aesthetic pursuits and maintain a quiet, influential presence within London's fin-de-siècle inner circle, earning the deep respect of contemporaries like Arthur Symons and Ernest Dowson. The four frontispieces are taken from the celebrated Beardsley edition of Morte D'Arthur, first published between 1893 and 1894.
