This book explores the sensibility of the alimentary canal, a topic largely neglected since the 19th century, despite major advances in our understanding of digestion. The author investigates the stimuli that trigger sensations in the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestin…e, and rectum, revealing that tactile stimuli do not provoke a response, while thermal and chemical stimuli do. The stomach is shown to be insensitive to thermal stimuli, while the small intestine responds only in exceptional cases, leading the author to conclude that sensations of fullness are responses to tension on the muscular coat of the organ rather than stretching of the abdominal wall. These findings challenge conventional medical wisdom, offering valuable insights into the causes of discomfort and pain in the digestive system and paving the way for more targeted therapies.
