One of Turkey's most celebrated writers explores themes of violence, otherness, and exile through a thrilling hybrid of poetry and prose that paints a vivid picture of Turkey's conflict-torn lands. One of Turkey's most celebrated writers explores themes of violence, otherness, and exile through a thrilling hybrid of poetry and prose that paints a vivid picture of Turkey's conflict-torn lands. In the two books paired here, translated into English for the first time, the great Turkish writer Ferit Edg represents complex social and political realities with startling lyricism. The Wounded Age features a newspaper reporter from Istanbul, assigned to write about ethno-national violence in the mountains of eastern Turkey. Like the narrators in Eastern Tales, he is a stranger in a region where a buried history-the state's violence against Armenians, Greeks, and Assyrians-continues uninterrupted with the subjugation of the Kurds. Language in this place, especially the language of outsiders, cannot be trusted. In the story "Interview," an old villager tells the narrator, "Make our photograph," and adds, "Send us the pictures. No need to write us letters." The minimal tales Edg tells are vivid pictures of life in the East-a house in ruins, an empty crib, wolves howling in the hills-and transcriptions of living voices. The reporter in The Wounded Age has no illusions that his story will stop the bloodletting; instead, he goes east because he knows he must open his eyes and unstop his ears. "A young man growing up in a small coastal village comes of age in an atmosphere of sublimated, disoriented male eroticism. Governed by religious and sexual taboos, rigid gender roles, stifling maternal love, and the enforced silences of social decorum, he is driven to the point of insanity from which he must slowly and painfully return. Told from several points of view and structured in a series of intersecting flashbacks and interior monologues, the novel describes the difficult geography of male intimacy from multiple perspectives¿adolescent friendship, homosexual desire, mother-son bonds, and those between men and women." | SHIPS AIRMAIL INTERNATIONALLY!

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. A century before the publication of Edward Saids Orientalism, a passionate discourse emerged in the Ottoman Empire, rebutting politicized Western representations of the East. Until the 1930s, Ottoman and early Turkish Republican intellectuals, well acquainted with the European political and cultural scene and charged with their own ideological agendas, deconstructed tired cliches about the Orient. In this book, Zeynep Celik recontextualizes Eurocentric postcolonial studies, unearthing an important episode in modern Middle Eastern intellectual history and curating a selection of primary texts illustrating the debates. A Critical Discourse 18721932. A critical inquiry on the major themes that dominated early responses to Orientalism Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
