The relationship between Early Judaism and the New Testament is a major issue in biblical studies, one that has impacted Jewish-Christian relations for centuries. This impact has often been negative due to troubling misconceptions of both the New Testament and Jewish writings contemporaneous with it. Misunderstandings have arisen from inaccurate information, religious traditions, and anti-Semitism.Warren Carter and Ariel Feldman address and correct these misconceptions by engaging with the New Testament and major writings from Early Judaism, including the Apocrypha, Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, and the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as Philo and Josephus. The authors emphasize various interactions among these traditions for the purpose of better interpreting the New Testament and, importantly, avoiding anti-Jewish bias. This is an ideal supplemental textbook for students of the New Testament as well as interested clergy and laity. The text is straightforward and readable, and unlike other books on the topic, it does not assume prior knowledge of Early Judaism or of New Testament engagement with it. Each chapter recognizes troubling misunderstandings that people often have about the interactions between Early Judaism and the New Testament and includes discussion prompts.

The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls more than sixty years ago has revealed a wealth of literary compositions which rework the Hebrew Bible in various ways. This genre seems to have been a popular literary form in ancient Judaism literature. However, the Qumran texts of this type are particularly interesting for they offer for the first time a large sample of such compositions in their original languages, Hebrew and Aramaic. Since the rewritten Bible texts do not use the particular style and nomenclature specific to the literature produced by the Qumran community. Many of these texts are unknown from any other sources, and have been published only during the last two decades. They therefore became the object of intense scholarly study. However, most the attention has been directed to the longer specimens, such as the Hebrew Book of Jubilees and the Aramaic Genesis Apocryphon. The present volume addresses the less known and poorly studied pieces, a group of eleven small Hebrew texts that rework the Hebrew Bible. It provides fresh editions, translations and detailed commentaries for each one. The volume thus places these texts within the larger context of the Qumran library, aiming at completing the data about the rewritten Bible.

Published in conjunction with the exhibition Richard Deacon: What You See Is What You Get presented at The San Diego Museum of Art from March 25 to July 25, 2017. Firm binding, clean inside copy. *** "Among the artists who redefined British sculpture in the 1980s, Richard Deacon (born 1949) remains a pioneering figure. This book presents the full range of the artist's oeuvre, from freestanding sculptures and wall-mounted works to glazed ceramics and works on paper. Deacon sidesteps the issue of technique: nails, screws and mounts are not hidden in his sculptures, and willowy bent-wood pieces contrast with carefully engineered constructions in galvanized steel and welded polycarbonate. Like the tension in so many of Deacon's titles, this book suggests a paradox. As with the whole of the artist's oeuvre, the selection in this book, spanning more than 30 years, is based on contradictions: the tension between a word and its meaning." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Director's foreword, by Roxana Velasquez; Ut sculptura poesis, by Ariel Plotek; Useful ambiguities, by Robin Clark; Art for other people, by Richard Deacon; Interview with Richard Deacon, by Anita Feldman.
